The demo levels have a LUA script that changes you to the correct character on loading the level, so that would work in place of just having character blocks, although I'm not sure what name you'd use to switch to Peach (Or Rinka, since that character has no demo level, but is slated for replacement...

Flash is dead. It's ending any and all support after this year, Chrome doesn't run it at all, and Fallout Equestria: Remains was the last thing released for it AFAIK.

I don't have 1.4.5, I asked because I found out that that feature was what was causing the crash on a specific level one of the SMBX2 dev team complained about because it didn't work on anything he had. For the incomplete NPCs, Blerts seem to work fine apart from a graphical glitch, though Goldblerts just reproduce forever.

For the lava layers, if we use Source Engine terms, those layers would be brushes.

Dry Bones Shell shouldn't be too hard, just base it on the skull raft, but swimming through lava is probably way too much work.

It outright crashes PGE with "Aborted! [SIGABRT]" citing that the filenames for the PGE libraries (I think) are invalid. Opening the file in Notepad shows that the file is in the 1.4.4 format but I can load Super Caleb Bros and Endless Maze levels (which I downloaded specifically to test this) in PG...
