I think you should try using custom music. The happy SMB3 dumdududum du dudu dum really destroys the dungen/underworld flair.

To me the world map looks mostly fine, except for maybe the hills on the up right floating in the air. I also think some of the new characters take away from the old characters' unique abilities. Luigi was always the character who can jump very high, Zelda is now outshining him in that aspect, while also providing other very useful features. So I guess they are more like "bonus" characters or some so...

Why does the first door in the hub lead you to a level called "Boss6 Tohou Edition" (or something like that) while such a level doesn't even exist? I think it should lead you to "Boss1.lvl" Without editing anything it always crashes when trying to go into the first level.

You could make shells act like they are in water. Because in water shells are slower. (Maybe too slow, though?) They would also fall slower, which you probably don't want.
