Re: SMBX All-Stars Level Contest (Sign-ups open!)

How do the judges play the levels, from the editor or from an episode?

Re: SMBX All-Stars Level Contest (Sign-ups open!)

You've probably already grouped the draw calls to as few as possible, right? One per texture is generally less expensive than one per object per texture and might save you some performance. glDraw is demanding on CPU, for the record. Most of my glDraw calls are either from particles.lua or need to ...

Re: SMBX All-Stars Level Contest (Sign-ups open!)

Few questions: -It would be okay to submit the project I've been trying to finish for a really long time, right? -Do all the judges have fairly decent machines? My level is somewhat demanding on CPU (and maybe GPU depending on how glDraw works) -The level uses a custom checkpoint system with the sam...

Re: Video Game Logics

This applies to most games actually, but have ever thought about the concept of turning around mid jump, in the air? I totally understand why games do this, because it makes the controls feel much more responsive but like many things it doesn't work IRL. At least as far as I know. Classic Castlevan...

Re: Creating a Timer

So for one of my World 3 levels, I was wanting a timer to countdown from 60, and only go back up while you're positioned next to a fire source. I'm not sure how to make the variable count down though, and I'm not experienced at LunaLua. How would I make this work accordingly? The Enjl Plains level ...

Phoenix Down, though... it's undead. You can kill a train with feathers XD

Re: SMBX2 (2.0 Beta 3)

More messing around with memory offsets got me some information not on the wiki. It looks like NPCs treated as blocks have hidden entries in the block array corresponding to their 0x150 value that use some of the unknown fields. These entries appear after normal blocks and aren't picked up by Block....

Setting a coin's .ai1 field to 1 makes it fall, at least for the SMB3 coin.

Re: Need help with lua? - LunaLua General Help

The shatterableBlocks table needs to have a list of the block types you're using for this. Otherwise I don't know why it wouldn't be working unless the file isn't being run or you have duplicate onStart or onTickEnd or something. Are the blocks with contents still acting like "?" blocks? Edit: It sp...

Re: Need help with lua? - LunaLua General Help

Ok, I'm assuming I'd need a different event for each block I want to use, since that's what tells it where to spawn the powerup. Here's something I wrote just to see if it would work. It automatically handles the NPC contents of the block types listed in the shatterableBlocks table. Note however th...

Why do you assume the only option is to have the FCC regulate the internet?

Re: Need help with lua? - LunaLua General Help

You could give the block an event that does nothing on being destroyed, and use onEvent() to detect it and spawn the powerup.

That's kind of backwards. You want to check the timer and correct the jump height every tick, right? You need to put most of that in onTick.

Re: Need help with lua? - LunaLua General Help

I think I get what you mean. Everything in onTick() is a loop, and if I use onJumpEnd() in said loop, then it will still detect it. Right? Sort of, onTick is part of the game loop. (A similar, older function is called onLoop().) You don't want to use Lunalua event functions inside anything else, th...

Re: Need help with lua? - LunaLua General Help

You don't need a loop. The game itself runs in a loop similar to what I described. It will run everything in onTick() once every tick. It will run onJumpEnd() at some point during the tick if applicable. Edit: You don't use onJumpEnd(), onTick() etc in other functions, they are automatically run by ...

Re: Need help with lua? - LunaLua General Help

What do you mean it needs to be within onJumpEnd? How are you using onTick? The game engine does something like this: runs onTick() does everything for physics and ai for this tick (I think onJumpEnd will be run some time in here) runs onDraw() draws graphics start over at onTick() again That is to ...
