Any More Powerful SMB Editors?

Postby therockmachine » Sat Mar 01, 2014 7:54 pm

Hi are there any other more powerful super mario bros level editors out there?

I'm hoping there is something that allows a much more easier integration of custom made sprites/backgrounds/etc.

Can't say there are many powerful SMB Editors such as SMBX, but there are some great Engines out there that may be of good use and remark a great experience to those who have not so much experience on level designing.

Mario Worker - A Classical SMB Editor, with the basic elements of SMB3. With no doubt, the best SMB Editor Engine known to the date after SMBX, or at least by me. Even though Mario Worker's editing style may not be as friendly as SMBX, it's worth trying, and with no doubt worth using for future projects, existing SMBX or not.

Super Mario: Uprising - I honestly don't know too much about this editor, but I did see some shots from it by a user who certainly loves it. I can't really tell if it's really friendly regarding level edition, but appears to be interesting so far. Though, it appears you need to use it for some time in order to unlock some stuff for future use. I could call it original I guess, but some people find it rather unnecessary and annoying.

Super Mario Bros: Flash - A Online SMB Editor. From all the engines I know, in my opinion, is the less suggestible regarding the creation of a project. The editing is rather limited, and you're only able to edit levels, not world maps, or more precisely, you can only play levels by copying its code and loading it onto the application.

These are all the ones I know, hope it helps.

More powerful? Probably Lunar Magic (the SMW Rom editor).
Easier to use? SMBX is probably the easiest while still having depth.

Mario Builder is also a Powerful Editor but you need a Powerful PC as well. Here there are multiple elements as well and it is a long running project where you can easily make a SMB3 Styled Game (and more)...

Super Mario Flash 1 and 2- SMF1 is fully based on SMB1 and SMF2 is ultimately based of SMW. SMF2 has REAL torpedo teds though...

Mario Builder is probably the next best thing to SMBX, and can do some things that SMBX can't (like one-use bonus levels and switch palaces, and more power-ups), but it's based on the Hello Engine, so the physics are really shaky and weird. I also don't think it supports custom NPCs. You can try it if you want, though.

As of now, I believe SMBX is the most powerful non hacking resource for making Mario levels and IMO the best.

Someone already mentioned Hello Engine, but I think some more information would be useful.
I've used Hello Engine before. It's not as powerful as SMBX per say, but considering it's essentially "open source" Gamemaker code, it's by far the most powerful out there. You can add or do literally anything you want, but you have to know how to read and write GML. There's a version out there for Gamemaker Studio, but you're going to have to pay for Gamemaker Studio then, as the free version is severely crippled. Another thing to keep in mind: Hello Engine is quite laggy (or at least the one for the old Gamemaker is, Yoyogames added performance enhancements to Gamemaker Studio), so I don't recommend it if you have an old computer.

More power = more complexity.

I would recommend something along the lines of Lunar Magic if you want to make SMW hacks, some people have made extremely good hacks with this, and there's a whole community of people out there that dedicate their time to the project. I wouldn't recommend Super Mario Uprising as it's still in an early Alpha as far as I'm aware, and you have to apparently "unlock" blocks and things by playing other levels, which doesn't sound that great.

If you want something with a little bit more features, I would recommend Mario Builder, though I don't know too much about it. I'd also recommend the Hello Engine and CatezeeY's Engine, both of which require Gamemaker knowledge, but they're pretty powerful in my opinion.

Other than that, all I can say is stick with SMBX, if you really want to try something else, go with Lunar Magic.
I used to be 8bitmushroom but not anymore.

Popularity among both, SMBX and Mario Builder is like a huge cliff separating two mountains. Due to SMBX's supremacy Nintendo mostly took it more seriously than Mario Builder.
