Reign of the Gatekeepers (50TH STAR ADDED!)

Tadaaa, this is my official second SMBX project after 8 months of development and testing! There are 6 worlds in total, each consisting of 7 main levels, a secret house and a separate boss encounter (some levels will have mini-boss fights in them). There is also a main hub area as well as a final level, which will be unlocked once all other levels have been passed. The game was created using SMBX 1.3.0.1 so it should work fine on both version 1.3 and 2.0 but let me know if you spot any errors/bugs and I'll fix them asap. I would personally recommend playing this in version 1.3.0.1 as that's the one that the episode was originally intended for.

Inspiration for this game includes classic old school games such as Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. 3, Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy, Jazz Jackrabbit 2 and many others. Rather than being a simple platformer, I wanted each level to have its special 'theme' in order to feel more memorable.

Players have the freedom to choose which world to start with and can complete the worlds in any order they like. At the end of each level, there is a star to be collected and a special room in the hub area allows you to see if you have collected that star or not. There are 50 stars in the game in total. Can you find all of them?... Note that this episode contains semi-mature content (e.g. non-gory human and humanoid corpses).

UPDATE 07/10/2018: A final 50th star has been added to the episode! Let the hunting for it begin ;)

I really love this episode, It has an incredible world map, but the levels are good but some of them are kinda lacking, so it's good for now.

Thanks for the feedback! When you say "kinda lacking", what exactly are they lacking?

Some levels and the design. But I still like your levels.

I cannot beat Carnivarous Chomps level because of small Chomp forcing the big one move his way back.

Thanks for noticing that issue, glitch4. I've now gotten rid of all the small Chomps from that level section and will update the download link asap.

uh, that didn't happen when I tested it

I believe in three 72 mm large, 690 g heavy iron balls as my lords and saviours.

It's not worth to use the legacy editor anymore these days. Get SMBX2 and PGE, it will improve your experience significantly. Here's why.

Did you double-check yourself to make sure that it really was a problem?

I tested it last one week ago (I guess) so was anything changed in the meantime?

I don't recall having had any problems like that when I was testing it. And no, nothing was changed in that level in the meantime so not sure why the issue occurred. In any case, to make sure that no bugs appear, I've removed the small Chomps from the chase scene.

Sorry, Ryuji231, but I'm not quite sure I understand what you mean... Are you referring to level 4-3 "Sandship Shenanigans"? It's been tested before and I tested it again now but I didn't find any glitches or bugs in it.

Oh, I see :D

Hi Ryuji231, thanks for the feedback so far. Not sure what you mean when you say "50/50 rage"?

I completed your episode and i really loved it! I like how there is a different gimmick for each level, so playing each of then feels like a new experience.
And i also liked the story of the gatekeepers about how they ruined the land they rule, with each level telling more about it, building more hype for the decisive fight against then. But i must say that i was kinda disappointed with the gatekeepers looks, i thought some of them would look more intimidating since they done so much cruelty to the land they rule, but in the end they looked goofy and even cute.
Spoiler: show
But on the other side i really liked how the final showdown was getting tense the more i climbed the stairs, with each stair throwing elements of the past worlds, and those npcs asking me confronting questions, and the epic music in the background, but in my opinion that quiz was a bit unnecessary. And i was not expecting getting betrayed by the one that accompanied me on the whole adventure. Wicked move from you Bombette! :o
I also founded some bugs in the game:
-In the Grooda fight, the left hand move so low that there is no way to dodge his attack, i had to move it up a bit in the editor in order to proceed.
-The enemy fantasmo's fireballs have broken graphics and awful hitboxes (this caused me so much trouble in the final battle!).
-There is a lot of decimal numbers in the npcs text documents, this caused them to run absurdly fast and even crash SMBX with a "type mismatch" error.

But despite that, overall i loved this episode! It became one of my favorites already! :P
I hope to see more good games from you! Ciao!

Hi Ruan555, thank you very much for the feedback, I appreciate it! Well, no one tells you what the Gatekeepers look like so that's part of the hype (sorry that they looked a bit undermining for you) :P

As for the bugs:
- The left hand in the fight with Grooda is supposed to fall lower, thus causing you to use the middle spot in the arena to hide. Didn't you listen to what Bombette said right before the fight? :D
- That's weird - the Fantasmo enemy and its fireballs were fine on my computer. Did you play the game in 1.3 or 2.0?
- Didn't experience things like that or any error pop-ups when I was testing the game. I'd recommend using 1.3 when playing the episode as that's what it was originally intended for. Could you please tell me which levels you got that error in?

Again, massive thanks for playing, very happy that it's one of your favourite SMBX games now :)

-The thing is: even if i use the middle spot, i still get hit. And i was crouching too.
-I didn't played the game on 1.3 or 2.0, i played it on 1.3.0.1. (maybe this was the problem the whole time?!)
-I got the super fast npc bug in the following levels: 1-3 Vicious Vines, 2-4 Precarious Platforms, 3-1 Sinister Ships, 3-6 Ferocious Fleet 2.0, 4-1 Dodgy Dunes and the last level Ultimate Showdown.
As for the crashing bug, i got it on the levels: 3-3 Day of the Super Koopas... That's about it.

- I've now placed the left hand in the Grooda fight slightly higher to make sure the player does not get hurt even when crouching in the middle spot.
- And when I wrote about version 1.3, I meant 1.3.0.1 (which means that you tested the game on the same level editor version that I used to create it) and it's weird as I don't see any issues with the Fantasmo fireballs :/ I'm curious to hear if other people have experienced the same...
- Thanks for the level clarification. I might sound a bit cheeky with this question but do you remember exactly which NPCs were moving faster than normal? This would help me target the correct NPC texts when getting rid of the bug.
