What is America's worst social problem?

Postby DarkMatt » Wed Jan 04, 2017 9:47 pm

Had an interesting topic of discussion in today's sociology class. America has several big problems with society.

What are they? Well, that's for you to figure out.

Gimme a post of what you think is the greatest social problem. If you want, you can include other problems you see in American society, but for the sake of statistic, I wish for you to pick one that should be solved now. After all, we're not supermen, if there are multiple problems we can probably only fix them one at a time.

We are hypocrites, we always talk about how great we are and criticize other countries for there issues yet never mention our own. Do a little research about the native americans, if you don't understand what I'm saying.

People are too attached to social media and smart devices. People always have to update their accounts with what they're doing and rely too much on their technology. It's so sad that people will believe all of the news they read on Facebook and Twitter without actually doing research. IMO, smart phones also encourage anti-socialism.

Interesting topic btw ;)

Americans are so narcissistic. There's so many movies, like London Has Fallen for one, that are just meant to make America look great.

Also as of 2016, one of America's new-found social issues is Trump. That problem shouldn't be too hard to get rid of...

From what i have heard about the Americas, its class imbalance. We talked about this in discord, as there are to little lower class people struggling to make ends meet, and major amounts of homeless people.

Agreed that they are biased to themselves from them talking about other countries problems before there own is common, but maybe thats how the world outside of Americas view them? maybe? idk? Regardless i still think it is the problem with class imbalance. thats just how i feel from what i hear from other people talking to me.

America is arrogant, selfish and somehow Trump and Hillary were the main president candidates...
I can't even mention a single thing that's better in the U.S. than in the E.U.

This thread is to point out a social problem with America, not to blatantly trash talk it.

Opinions are opinions and I'm certainly up for discussion, but let's try to keep it objective in this thread for the sake of statistics and trying to sound legitimate.

All banter aside, I think one of the biggest social problems in the US is the extreme identity politics going on. If someone isn't in your certain group, then they are isolated or even demonized. Look at the Facebook live torturing that just happened like 2 days ago. That was caused by those people feeling that their identity validated their actions against that man. The influential figures in media demonize people like Donald Trump and white men (MTV, BUZZFEED, GUARDIAN, ETC) and leads to things like this

Probably racism. It might not be as overt as it was in the 60s, but racism is still baked pretty deep into American culture, and it's horrible.

It's about to get ALOT worst with two things:

1. Trump is going to be president
2. People don't take femenism as seriously anymore (When someone hears "femenist" they think of a fat girl with dyed hair saying all men are pigs. That sort of stuff.)
just kidding.

Potentially. It's about to get potentially worse. It's not healthy to worry about things that aren't certain to happen. I mean, I believe this country's going on a wild ride, that much is for certain, but I can't tell you it's because of white supremacy or otherwise. We'll have to wait and see. That's what makes the wait arduous. Anyway, great answers all of you.

I put down racism and sexism as my answer. There's still several parts of our nation that has an extreme, unrational hatred towards defying racial and gender identity. Like, to the point where we're trying to act like how things were 150 years ago when we're suppose to know why it was terrible way back then. Education COULD help but well, that's another big social problem. I still pick what is actually contributing towards violence today, and because I find it the biggest problem is because we've been campaigning against this for far too long with the only results being getting racists and sexists to be passive-aggressive instead. If we want to stop the circle I believe it should be stopped at the source.

The extreme of it, yeah. But people like Zoe Quinn is a big example of how people don't take femenism as seriously. Zoe Quinn was a person that wanted equality, but then the internet decided to mess up everything she tried to do.

welp, you just showed how you have no idea what you are talking about. entire Zoe Quinn debacle stirred around her sleeping with game journos for good press. When people read the good reviews and bought her game and found it was bad, people were mad, and when they questioned why the game had such high reviews, they got told that they were sexist. Thats what the Zoe Quinn thing was all about, she wanted undeserved attention. Thats why the internet "messes her up", because she's a liar.

I've heard on the news that there are still schools in Missouri that seragate(did i spell that wrong) white people and other races. They literally have schools with just whites in them and schools with just only one race in them. This also comes complete with bullying. The state I live in (Idaho) has trouble getting the message across to stop it too. There was this one time in fourth grade where a kid asked my teacher if Idaho has any problem with serragation. She just plainly said "No", and I just decided to call bolagna on that one because everywhere you look in the US, people are getting shunned for their race.

It really isn't that ridiculous. While I'm more for the equalism spectrum, the only parts of feminism that are incessantly terrible are the extremists that like to dictate much of everything. It serves a use in attempt to destroy the agenda of sexism, but I feel it just falls victim to being put in a bad light way too often, which is why nobody takes it seriously anymore. Essentially, blame the extremists.

I feel one of the worst social problems we have right now is the big divide between lower-class and upper-class citizens/families, and all the stereotyping that ensues, like everyone from the lower-class living off of food stamps and welfare checks (we don't, by the way). It creates a social divide where the economic classes are seen inferior to one another, and it generates a lot of tension and brewing hatred toward others, especially when a lot of the people in either class act self-entitled because of their situations. I'm not sure how widespread this problem is across all of the states, but it's increasingly prominent in mine because there's this odd fluctuation between lower-class citizens and upper-class citizens. You could be in a lower-class neighborhood that has at least one or two mansions housing an upper-class family that act as the grand matriarchs of the 'hood.

Another issue that isn't talked about quite as often is this self-entitled behavior that follows with age. I find that a lot of age groups shit on or just shut out younger age groups quite often and treat their opinions and viewpoints as superior to anyone of a younger age group's opinions or viewpoints. One of the biggest examples of this (and again, I'm not sure how widespread it is, but it's prominent in my state) is when a group of young adults (17-early 20's) want to debate a topic, they are shut down by all of the 40 to 60 year old adults who act superior just because they're older. I've met a great deal of people in that age group that have no valuable viewpoints or interesting topics for debate, but they still insistently try to quiet the younger majority.
I feel that this problem had some sort of play in the politics because it was shaming the younger generation for who they vote on. I remember some reports of younger women who voted for candidates such as Sanders, but they were harassed by the older women who were voting for Clinton because "muhh female president". I'm sure there was a lot more depth into that topic, but it's what I remember off the top of my head. Though this situation does fall back on the problem with sexism in our communities (it's a two-way street), I feel it still had weight because it was an older generation pressuring the younger generation.

At this point I'm rambling, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents.
tl;dr I definitely feel one of our worst social problems is the divide between the lower-class and upper-class.
