What kind of things call your attention on Windows systems?

Postby Scroll » Sat Jan 12, 2019 1:02 pm

Title

Well I like the sounds, specially the startup and shutdown ones. Also I like to see the strange things that the computers do when there's a serious problem or a virus (like the Bluescreen of Death). But of course I dont want to see my computer doing that! I just watch videos!

The fact that later versions don't have Space Cadet Pinball anymore. That was the stuff back then.

You can still get it on the Internet. I did that last year.

Just recently played again. New PULVERISING highscore of 242 million yesterday. If you want to know my strategies I can tell you via PM

Since I'm a 90's kid, I'd say the 3-D pinball called my attention.

I liked the Pinball too

Also this may sound dumb but I really like the startup sound from Windows Server 2003... IDK why... Seems some kind of Christmas in like 20 or 30 years ago

Well, there is no viable alternatives.
The thing that caught my attention was just... idk when I began going to elementary school, computers were already widespread here and weren't really a privilege, though they were quite slow by today's standards.

Well Linux is a bit more complicated to use and it has less things which it's compatible with.
At least it looks more complicated if anything.

Linux has always been unappealing to me. Of course, that is because I didn't grow up with it, I only met it at college. But I experienced also that some former Iceweasel version always froze and that the cursor disappeared and that stuff.

My school gave me a mini-laptop when I was like 8 and it had Linux. I experienced some incompatibility issues and that but in the rest I did not have a single problem, everything was fine, the system is very potent (I was not the only one with these thoughts, many people liked it as well) and it's still alive (although I don't use it that much right now), even if the screen of the laptop is about to break...

Spoiler: show
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
Any modern distro really isn't difficult to use nor learn. Since everyone has been saying "Linux" as if it were an operating system it's kind of confusing what the actual grievances here are. Ubuntu, Mint, and ElementaryOS are great distros that are getting more polished as of late. I've switched to Linux Mint several months ago and the experience is just better and different than Windows. You have full control over your computer which is great (but can sometimes be an issue when you don't know what you're doing), and the inherently better security is also a positive. Windows has a registry system, no package manager, and every application needs its own update service which doesn't seem like a big deal until you use an alternative that lets you update everything all at the same time and get your software from one trusted source. Like it's actually kind of weird to me now that Windows still has installation wizards that tend to have PUPs come along with them.

Not saying Linux distros are perfect though. Windows still has the developer market held so finding a GNU/Linux compatible version or alternative can still be a problem. This used to be a big problem with games but Valve has helped a lot in that regard, but still some proprietary software like Adobe's products are Windows only which people need for work. Sure there's GIMP, much better PDF readers/writers, and other tools available for any given Linux distro but they're not used in an enterprise environment so they're used more by students and hobbyists for now. If/when Adobe makes their software compatible with GNU/Linux that will be a major shift in the tides for OS adoption I feel. The only thing left holding Windows up will be that's it's overwhelmingly common to be the default option. Internet Explorer was only "popular" because it was the default browser that came with Windows that was also installed by default. I really think Windows will experience what Internet Explorer did and just hold onto a gradually shrinking market share until it just dissolves.

The fact that its quality has been in decline since the turn of the century. Windows XP was the peak of quality for Windows (and if not, then an earlier version, but I have not used any of those) and it has decreased overall ever since.

Windows is compatible with a lot of stuff. Also Windows 10 looks nice and appeling to my eyes.
