Sonic 3 Complete is a very interesting hack of Sonic 3 and the definitive way to play the game, imo.
It's essentially the same as the base game, but it offers a variety of improvements and customizable options.

Some Super Mario World ROM hacks seem to be almost like you're playing something completely different, in terms of mechanics and all. A classic example is the Call of Cthulhu ROM hack. I've always wondered WHY there are so many ROM hacks for SMW and not something like say, SMB3.

SMW became the more popular option which means that it has become more convenient as more user-friendly get developed as a result. This in turn would attract people who are getting into hacking to choose SMW, because the existing community has ensured that hacking SMW is easier than hacking other games.
Signatures are overrated.

I won't be surprised of someone already named Newer Super Mario Bros Wii. It's just a really cool hack with custom bosses and all

Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii. The boss fights are awesome (except for the Koopalings, because they are too generic), bonus Worlds, good music and amazing level design.

A ROM hack called Super Mario Bros. 3 Mix. It's an amazing ROM hack, with so much from other games, even gravity mechanics and Star Coins.

I feel like saying this ROM Hack is interesting, despite being a bootleg hack* on the original Gameboy,

Super Mario 4 (A hack of Crayon Shin Chan 4)

*Yes, Bootleg hacks counts btw! :D
