What if the Famicom Disk System was successful outside of Japan

Postby FireyPaperMario » Mon May 01, 2017 8:49 am

Most of us know that there's a add-on accessory for the Japanese NES (Or Famicom) that requires disks instead of cartridges called the Famicom Disk System! And would this add-on be successful in other countries and the US?

Nintendo would never have allowed that. Floppy disks are much easier to copy than cartridges, and they cannot incorporate electrical circuitry (and thus would have made it impossible for Nintendo to impose censorship via the 10NES chip; some other jail would have had to have been designed). But if they did bring it over, then nothing important follows. Even in Japan it was a minor interest; some basic math shows that around 1/4 the people who owned a Famicom also had the disk system. Floppy disks are irrelevant today because they're inefficient compared to flash memory.

I've heard that Nintendo actually had plans of releasing the FDS outside of Japan, but they had already cancelled the idea when it was approved for release.
