Favorite Video Game Soundtrack(s)

Postby ShadowStarX » Thu May 07, 2015 2:16 pm

As I saw, there is no thread like this, so I make them if it's no problem.
What soundtracks (or just musics) do you like from video games?
I like all of these (and maybe I forgot some but prob not):
"Donkey Kong Country" series (especially DKC2 and Tropical Freeze)
Castlevania: Symphony of the night
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Mega Man 2
F-Zero
Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
Mario Kart 8
Shovel Knight
Undertale

I love the Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy soundtracks. They both have a variety of songs that stun and amaze me, I just love the full orchestra in SMG and all of the retro-like songs and remixes in SPM.

I also enjoy Portal 2's soundtrack, which can be downloaded for free on the game's website. It just has so many awesome songs to test by!

The first Mega Man X. Compared to the earlier games, there seemed to be quite a leap in what they could do. Even so, I also enjoyed Mega Man 7's tracks.

Jet Set Radio is a really unique and funky feel to it, and it's probably one of Hideki Naganuma's best works.
Metroid Prime 1 and 2 have really ambient music, each making its area come to life. The atmosphere of both games is mainly set by the great music.
Sonic Adventure 2 has an awesome soundtrack with a lot of variety, from the action-packed rock from Sonic stages to the so-bad-it's-good Knuckles raps.
Shadow of the Colossus follows the early method of making very memorable melodies, but with an epic orchestrated feel, and it works excellently.
Metal Gear Solid 2 has some great general BGM, movie-esque cutscene music, some excellent moodpieces, and quick and stressful boss and alert music.
Mighty Switch Force isn't even explainable. Just look up "Caught Red Handed", "Love You Love You Love", and "Whoa I'm in Space Cuba", and you'll know what I mean.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is full-out screamo, and it works SO well for the game that you can't help but love it.

That was a pretty rushed list, so I'll give a bunch of honorable mentions as well.
Bayonetta 2, Black Mesa, Cave Story, Freedom Planet, F-Zero, Katamari Damacy, Kirby Air Ride, Little Big Planet 1 & 2, Megaman X, Metal Gear Solid 3, PixelJunk Shooter 1 & 2, Portal 1 & 2, Ratchet & Clank 2, Shovel Knight, Nearly every Sonic the Hedgehog game ever (Sonic CD [Japan], Adventure, and Unleashed are good starting points), A bunch of Sonic spinoffs (All Stars Racing and Spinball for starters), The original Spyro trilogy, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Tekken 6, Zelda: Majora's Mask

Yes, I listen to too many video game soundtracks.
I'm not very active here. It's not really anybody's fault, it's just that I really don't have the dedication to come here daily like some other people. If it takes me a while to get back to you, sorry. If you want to be in more consistent contact with me, you could friend me on Steam.

The most enchanting one I know of would be the soundtrack to "Croc: Legend of the Gobbos". The only thing I can find that comes close to it would be the Bejeweled Soundtrack, namely Bejeweled 3 and it's "Butterflies Mode" theme. Other than that, the Mario ones that use live orchestras like 3D World and the SMG series are pretty decent.

Any Touhou soundtrack, as well as the one for SavantAscent.
Ideas are useless if you can't make them real.

I probably have over 300 tracks I love and I don't know which I should like the most xD
Candidates for would be these:

Xenoblade Chronicles - Mechanical Rhythm
Super Paper Mario - Ultimate Show
Zelda Wind Waker - Ocean Theme
Zelda Majoras Mask - Stone Tower Temple
Zelda A Link Between Worlds - Lorule Castle

Why no one has said anything about Kirby's Return to Dream Land? ;_;
That game has beautiful and awesome music, almost every level has a different song, unlike Mario games.

When I think about Return To Dream Land, I think of Dangerous Dinner, the theme of the first level or the Boss theme. I don't know why I like Dangerous Dinner so much even if it is very short and not very...spectacular, but I love this track.
Triple Deluxe had also very good musics (Boss Battle theme, Masked Dedede and many level themes whose name I don't remember...)

And: I absolutely agree with you, h2643! The NSMB games has very monotonous and recurrent musics which are very boring after 10 years of NSMB -_-

And not just Return to Dream Land. Kirby generally seems to have done a pretty good job with the soundtracks.
