So it's probably predictable because it'a October, but this was also a requested idea for a contest. I hope many will be interested

Standard Level Contest Rules
Don't put your name in any of the files
Don't post any screenshots of the level nor a download link in the comments
You must submit your level before the deadline.
You may only submit one level, if you send two levels the second will be disqualified.
No joke levels, joke levels will not be judged.
Give your level a unique name. Nothing random or funky though.
Any level theme accepted (forest, ice, mountain, lava, etc)
Level can end in any fashion.
Custom Graphics are allowed
Custom Music is optional
Adding a boss is optional
LUNADLL/LUNALUA Not Allowed (If this causes option 2 to be impossible, then I may change this rule)

2. (Hard Option) Create a level that is actually scary, brings on suspense, really keeps people on their toes and paranoid, etc. I understand this is a mario game, so this clearly easier said than done. This is obviously going to be graded more critically in regards to whether it works as scary, and if done well will give creators a slight edge as compared to those who went with just option 1. I don't expect any of the levels to cause people to wet their pants or start screaming, but anything that brings some kind of freaky vibe to it will do justice to me. Of course those doing this option can do option 1 as well.

The Gengar Swamp (Don’t Turn Around) - Ness-Wednesday

Dang I really liked this level’s design, concepts, and gameplay. Sadly there are a ton of mess ups and flaws. There was a lot of enemy spam I felt wasn’t necessary. I also found myself collecting swamp water as coins, so I recommend fixing this. The boss fight at the end needs to be reworked so every decision leads to the following event instead of giving directions for what to do. Nobody likes being told how to play a level unless they’re stuck and need help. I think this level has great potential and there was a lot of work put into it, but there’s still much to fix. Please don’t give up on this level, I’d love to replay it when you fix it up.

Rotten Flesh Spell - Harvey36Dice

This is the closest to scary a level gets. The music initially brings an uneasy feeling like something is gonna pop out at you, but I was disappointed to not get any jump scares or any other kind of horror. Then again, the fact that you made me feel uneasy in a mario level is quite a rarity, so props to you. After a while the music was more irritating than spooky though. Needless to say, this level is still really done well, and again does the best at making a level scary. Graphics were well used too as always. I saw a bad area with the lava when you had it on the same level as the ground, and that’s deceiving too somewhat since you have the skull raft there too. The chain chomp chains were an issue when they were frozen of just killed for they stuck around too. The blood effects were good and added to the chill factor too. You were a little too generous with power-ups too, so I’d say cut down on them. Some death effects weren’t as well done either, but I appreciate the sign that informs players of one of them. Another issue was found with the lava moving up with the skull raft for the raft got all weird when trying to dodge the red skull blocks. Overall I thought the level was still good and fun to play with a decent chill factor. It’s easy enough where you can cut down on power-ups and I recommend having others play this too.

Hallows Eve - Jacob Turbo

This is an okay level, but there’s a lot of work needed. I liked the background, but the grass tileset doesn’t really belong. The level feels so empty too. Like there are a lot of NPCs, but they’re spaced out weird, and the atmosphere feels more abandoned than anything else. Nothing really flows well while gimmicks were thrown all over the place. There could’ve been more scenery utilized. Believe it or not I actually did enjoy playing this level, but there’s much more that could be done to make the level great on a critical level.

Border of Life - Litchh

I love the music, the theme, the visuals…. everything about this level. This isn’t scary at all, but the ideas and everything put into it are brilliant! There a few issues I ran into, but a lot was put into this and pays off. This is a decently difficult level too where you need to be vigilant at all times, but the enemy spam isn’t too bad, if not bad at all. The level is rewarding when you finish (the sense of being rewarded at least), and it has good replay value. Oh and getting the extra stars is worthwhile too, nothing too demanding or frustrating. Great job overall!

The Last Shy Guy Exorcism - PixelPest

Smb2 is another greatly limited game as far as graphics go, but this level exceeds them. Having toad heads and dead shy guys is a good touch to create a chilling level. I found you could get to the very top of level, and there’s no secrets there so I’m assuming it’s a bad thing. This level had a lot going for it until you hit the boss fight with ghost wart. Not that the boss was bad (it was very challenging actually), but it really cut the level short when there could’ve been a lot more to do. Overall this is a good level, but I wish there was more to it for everything seemed shorter than it needed to be.

Entry 2 - 9.5/10

Amazing. You just took the words out of my mouth. A very spooky-- not even. Scary level for SMBX. The music fits perfectly with everything. The only thing that stopped you from that 10 is the glitch that always killed me: When you're on that rising lava with the 3 skulls part, everytime a skull hits a demon block it disappears, making it semi impossible to get past that part.

Entry 3 - 6.0/10

Pretty good concept. But the NPC placements are terrible, and the checkpoint is too early. I died countless times because of the Kamek spam. My suggestion is put less NPCs and make Kameks able to be killed by fire balls.

Entry 4 - 9.0/10

Very hard touhou style of level. The tileset fits the music and the NPCs(pretty rare!), and the secret stars are easy to aquire(unless you're me, in that case you spent 3 hours of ragequitting at the bossess)! Good job over all.

Entry 5 - 7.0/10

Very good SMB2 styled level. Kind of hard, but easy at the same time. Toad heads from the ground look funny, not spooky. And you should warn the player that the boss doesn't need to have his mouth open to take damage.

Border of Life - 6/10
Now here's an interesting take on the haunted/scary level concept. It's a Touhou level, and while it doesn't look creepy at first, it still maintains the rather creepy atmosphere, yet it doesn't throw it in your face. The main ideas here are about life and death. There are still Boos in the level, but they aren't as common as the Touhou enemies, but the way they are used brought some nice gimmicks such as the diagonal Boos in the final section. I also liked the atmosphere and the presentation of the level, as well as the projectile-dodging Touhou segments, although that's where the level's problems lie. The first Touhou segment is just before the checkpoint, and if the player isn't used to it, it can be really hard, and then they have to retrace all their steps because they died just before the checkpoint. Towards the end it basically turned into "see how far you can get dodging all these enemies" and I'm glad the level has a decent length to stop it being too hard.

Hallows-Eve - 4/10
Halloween is perfectly defined in this level, with the Boos and pumpkin-like enemies that are abundant. The graphics and enemy NPCs used drives the point home, and I like how a choice of character is given at the start, but it doesn't affect the level itself. Unfortunately, the level, despite being spooky, suffers from first-level syndrome. The overworld background is a bit bland, the pumpkin Bullet Bills at the very start at least appear to be just plonked here and there, and appears to be an attempt at a gimmick that wasn't executed properly, and the Banzai Bill doesn't look good with them either. The first section looks pretty bland as well as the landforms are pretty flat and barren with sparse decoration, and there aren't a lot of coins either (nearly all of them are contained in blocks). The jumping over Podoboos segment at the end had the potential to be explored in depth, but once again, it appears to be a cheap attempt at a gimmick that didn't have the potential to be explored. However, the biggest flaw was that after the checkpoint, the level became one batch of enemies followed by another, which, along with the rest, makes the level feel boring.

Rotten Flesh Spell - 8.4/10
This looks like something lifted straight out of a creepypasta! This is more than creepy: it even borders on unnerving! There's blood everywhere! The music and the graphics convey this vibe, and at some points I even got a little bit scared from just playing the level! This shows that the level does the scare job very well! But even through that, I enjoyed playing the level. The length of the level would be perfect, if a little on the short side, and the difficulty is moderate enough to keep things enjoyable (yet scary!), but at its very heart, this level requires the player to explore different paths to advance in order to alter lava formations, with some other things thrown into the mix to prevent the level getting too boring, like a fairy flying part. The clever uses of the Skull Raft made things interesting, as alongside just riding them over lava, there is also a cool gimmick involving having to stay on it as long as possible as a platform rises. However, the problem is with the Skull Rafts. Some of them end at a wall, meaning if you try to jump off them while stopped, you'll be thrown through the wall in the same direction of the raft movement, possibly dying. But it's still a really awesome level nonetheless.

The Last Shy Guy Exorcism - 5.4/10
The amount of blood in this level is too damn high! I like how the level was decorated to look creepypasta-like. and also the addition of a backstory to this level made things more interesting and rather unsettling at the same time, further driven home by the bloody graphics used, but despite that, it plays like a standard SMB2 level with a possessed Wart at the end. There is something to do in most sections, especially the second where you have to collect all the purple coins to advance. The level does feel a bit on the short side though, and it could do with a bit of lengthening, and you're not given much room to dodge Wart's fireballs either. But there isn't really much to talk about a level that's short, so I'll cut the review of the level here.

The Gengar Swamp - 5.69/10
Pretty meh ghost house level here. A lot of events drive the haunted theme nicely, such as a sizable platform disappearing as the player walks past it, and there are several different sections to add variety, including overworld platforming, an underwater segment, a ghost house, a boss fight and a chase against lava. There are also several hidden warps in the level that lead to secret sections, one of them hosting a hidden star, and it's a novel concept considering this is a haunted level, but the player is given no indication where the warps are, and some are in the most weird of places where the player won't expect to look. Despite the spooky atmosphere conveyed very well, some design choices somehow kill it. The ghost house rising out of the ground was a pretty cool gimmick, but the issue is that if the player runs too fast and jumps too far, they'll land on the rising ground, and get crushed. If they run too fast, they'll land in the water and drown. The level is also too long, especially that after the player has beaten the boss, they think they're finished the level, and then bam! Another section! If they die here, they have a lot of backtracking to do. You may have to scale the length down, but this is helpfully compensated by the abundance of powerups in the level.

The Gengar Swamp

This level starts of fine and all, but after a quarter of the way through the level pretty much it starts getting worse, first there's some random shaking water
for no reason, then you enter an underwater section which is really boring, because it is literally the same thing over and over. After you exit the water
section there's a random house and an event that just makes it go up to reveal another house. And after that the level becomes an absolute clusterfuck,
random ceiling that crushes you that you have ABSOLUTELY no way of seeing, random red ground which is an instakill (Which by the way i died to because i didn't know what it did)
Also did i mention that this level is riddled with random warps that are pretty much useless?

Rotten Flesh Spell

This level might be the most fun to play out of all of them honestly. The atmosphere is okay and the music is wierd. The graphics are also way too light and some things really
make no sense, like the flying girls for example.

Hallow's Eve

This level is bad, it's very flat, the graphics are nonsense and the gameplay is boring. You can jump over a ceiling at one point. I have nothing good to say about this level
other than it's beatable

Border of Life

How does this relate to the contest topic in any way shape or form? Anyway, the gameplay is nothing special and the bullet hell miniboss isn't fun.
The whole level felt like it was just copied and pasted over and over again. Not very fun

The Last Shy Guy Exorcist

Uh, this level is wierd, it uses default smb2 cave music and it kills the spookiness factor. The atmosphere is horrible. I guess it IS haunted technically but it's not
scary in any way. The gameplay is fun but i didn't really like the collectathon though actually and the boss is an interesting interpretation of wart that can sadly be
very exploitable becuase the mushrooms below him.

Also, the Rex was a little weird for the fact that it had no gravity when it is small. The music added to the attmospheric condition to make it creepy though!

Are there any regulations or limits on cartoon blood/gore within the community and this contest or is it just "know your limit, play within it" and don't go over the top.

That is an excellent question. Personally I say do as much as you want, I can take a hit and will embrace anything. I'm not sure what the community limits or the other judge's limits are though.
