This is probably personal preference, but the idea of designing a level around one single power-up is uninteresting to me, and designing a level to work against a power-up is like shooting yourself in the foot.
Hey, yeah, thanks cubewatermelon, Sans looks great.

I don't think the discussion is about that so much as it's about designing the level around not-being-broken-by-a-single-power-up. If you can't do it, don't include the power-up in your level or episode.

I think it depends on the episode. If it has Mother Brain-based or custom bosses and/or lots of stuff with fire AND ice immunity, it can be OP very easily, but otherwise, it's just stronger than other weapons, just not OP.

In battle mode, do bill blasters hurt hammer suits? I'm curious as fuck now.

No.

I still find the Hammer Suit a fun power up to utulize and to me it depends of the situation if I want to use it or not if I have it ingame.

In my opinion it hardly depends on how one designs a level/episode with hammer suits in them.
I think it is a shame one cannot make NPCs immune to hammers, but since you also cannot do that with tailwhips, koopashells, or spinjumps too (like on the green spiny-egg), so one needs to build around that. But still, all the power-ups availiable in SMBX are fun to use for me, even with these facts.

When I build a level, I even take into account some of the items, that one isn't even supposed to have in the level/episode, so it will not be cracked so easily.
In my project you get the hammersuit quite late in the game, but you never get it through any toad houses, so when you even want to keep it, you need to survive with it until the end.
So my conclusion:
If you give it out very rarely and build your levels in a way that they simply cannot be broken, it is not overpowered - especially when thinking about the fact that it is gone after one hit. ^^

There's only one hope left.

Get fucking Chuck Norris or Norman Reedus. We must do something about the hammer suits.

Don't forget that, if you're ducking with the hammer suit, you're immune to Lava Lotus' pollen and Bowser/Bowser statue flames.

The Hammer Suit might be kinda OP, but I think that that's totally intentional. Just like the Tanooki Suit and blue shoe are the ultimate mobility power-ups that can completely break many difficult levels, the Hammer Suit is the ultimate offensive power-up, which can completely break many difficult bosses thanks to its range and power.

Games like this don't need competitive balance, since they're not competitively played. The level designer just needs to make sure to either use the stronger power-ups sparingly, or make the levels that allow them extra super-difficult.

I actually have the opposite problem. I've always sucked with the Hammer Suit. As soon as I get it, I immediately lose it due to some asinine contrivance.

I usually love to make fun of CC levels by using the hammer suit...
Gee, no wonder why I see these uncommonly in levels then how many times levels had Hammer suits in them.

Did you know that you can define whether or not an enemy is immune to hammers AND how much damage a hammer causes an enemy in SMBX 1.4.1? That's honestly pretty cool. You could make a Mega-Man like weaknesses for each enemy (for example, you assign the Hammer Bro's NPC code to 3 health, a fireball takes off 3 and a hammer takes off 1), if only powerups stuck instead being taken away from hit.

^ Even if it sounds pretty cool thats only for the future of smbx or better pge to find out. I never tried out any npc codes thus far in smbx 1.4.1 but it might be true that maybe some newer codes has been added. Smbx 1.3 sadly isnt that true though.

(First time typing that kind of message via phone because my internet is down... for over a day long. Let me tell you, its REALLY annoying)

No, I don't think it's overpowered. It's a very neat powerup, and it's a traditional powerup from Super Mario Bros 3.
You may think that it's overpowered in Super Mario Bros X, maybe due to the fact that one thrown hammer can hurt a boss twice or three times... That wasn't the fact in none of the Super Mario Bros 3 versions.
My opinion is also that not a very high difficulty makes an episode great but a very lot of well made levels!

It is overpowered as fuck and very fucking stupid!

Ok, in all seriousness this power up is way to broken to be even considered fair.
It is really annoying as said before that there's no nohammer code.
I mean, it's like their saying that your not allowed to make enemies immune to it and they
can't be made invincible. So yeah, it is overpowered.
