Is it bad?

Postby Circle Guy » Sat Feb 27, 2016 6:45 am

Is linear design a bad thing? I've seen so many people get a low score because of it. :?:

No.

It's bad if you execute it wrong. Linear levels can be good and fun.

It's not inherently bad, but it's subjective. I doubt a linear level would bother any reasonable person if it still had A. engaging obstacles and enemy placement and B. a few optional off-beaten path sort of things like secret areas in Super Mario Bros. (though even that much shouldn't be necessary to make a fun level).

Making a linear level isn't necessarily a bad thing but well, if it's always like that then it's just one way throughout the entire game if it's supposed to be a SMBX Episode with multiple levels that works like that. This is why the original SMB games they have alternate pathways like secrets to discover in their games.

Linear levels aren't bad. The main advantage of non-linear levels is that it encourage exploration and makes the level more replayable.

It would be much worse if you badly execute a non-linear level (e.g. make it a long and unintuitive maze) than a linear level.

In my opinion, I think linear levels CAN be good and fun, but they're a little boring, especially since secrets would only be found maybe in pipes or somewhere on higher ground. I just think that non-linear levels are more fun and encourage more exploration than non-linear levels (although they can be hell to create, especially on the fly, like I always do).

It's not difficult to make a good linear level. From what I have seen, people seem to keep making the same mistakes.
I myself am guilty of this recently but that's the only way a person would learn.
When I'm not playing SMBx I'll probably be on steam either playing some Terraria, TF2, L4D2 or Civ 4.
If you want to get a game in don't be afraid to just ask. I also play on my Wii U frequently and my NNID
is SirNightmayor if you want to contact me that way.

Linear levels are great for starters, and can be a good refresher once you've gotten into making non-linear levels. However, it is somewhat difficult to make stand-out levels with a linear structure. That being said, it is not impossible. And as said before, it is also subjective and ranges from person to person as to which they like better. I personally, like getting from point A to point B, rather than searching for alternative paths or solving large puzzles. (Which is because I'm lazy, of course :) )

I would like to ask, what levels have you seen gain low scores due to being linear?

About Linear

Postby RoundPiplup » Sun Feb 28, 2016 7:59 pm

I think that all my levels are simply linear... Straight forward levels where there's barely any secrets and explorations.
The Past still haunts me.
