The Funky Fresh Contest (The Groovy Results)

Postby The Thwomp King » Fri Mar 18, 2016 12:39 am

The final contest is finally being revealed for the 2015-2016 round of contests, and this theme is utterly random that I don't know if anyone would actually do this. XD hahaha
Anyone the funky fresh contest revolves around making a level that is relatively upbeat and bringing up spirits. I probably sound insane as I'm typing all of this, but I have examples below that may help you out.

Hopefully this will be a good end to a nice starting year to my contests.

Rules

Don't put your name in any of the files
Don't post any screenshots of the level nor a download link in the comments
You must submit your level before the deadline.
You may only submit one level, if you send two levels the second will be disqualified.
No poorly made joke levels.
Give your level a unique name. Funky is acceptable.
Any level theme accepted (forest, ice, mountain, lava, etc)
Level can end in any fashion.
Custom Graphics are allowed
Custom Music is optional
Adding a boss is optional
LUNADLL or LUNALUA is not allowed
-I do not have either programs I'm afraid, but if the codes aren't a major factor then that's fine.
Hopefully that's not too too strict
The level has to revolve around funkiness in some sort of way.
Custom music is very highly recommended that it's required!!! Furthermore pop culture songs may help seal yourself the win.
I won't show a whole entire list, but here are some ideas. I'm literally puking things out so I hope you guys will get the idea:
Spoiler: show
A club
A party
Casino
Old timey parties
The roaring twenties
Disco
Fraternity/Sorority
A dance
Strobe lights
Confetti
Game show
Gangnam Style
More dancing
Any music
techno music
A pub
An arcade
A dude's basement party
A toilet with super cool music and effects
Hopefully those will give you guys some sort of idea.

Entry 1: Blinking Blitz by Afraid of the Heights

I actually really enjoyed this level, but there are a lot of flaws that were filled inside of it. For starters as much as I like what you did with the blocks and graphics, they simply didn’t look that good. The flashlight gimmick was a brilliant idea, but it didn’t look as good as what you probably planned for it to be. The snake block gimmick was also creative, but you need to approach this by warning the player that it is going to start moving. You will cause a good amount of unfair deaths for unwary players and I wouldn’t blame them either for getting angry. Otherwise I do think you should use the snake block gimmick again later in the level. Music was okay, but it does fit the level so I can’t complain much there. I also thought this level should be longer too, but it ends kinda abruptly. You have a lot of great ideas for this level that I absolutely loved, but the way it is now it needs a lot of graphic fixing, length extending, and some fixed gimmicks.

4.6/10

Entry 2: Funky Underwater Park by litchh

So from what I’ve heard from my judges, part of this level was stolen from willhart's maglx 1 level. Sadly I will have to disqualify this level.

Entry 3: -1 Corrupted Dataway by MECHDRAGON777 (Chara)

I personally wouldn’t call this funky myself, but nonetheless the level follows the rules so I’m not gonna take off for that. The level is pretty simple and plays well. It’s a little on the short side, and there were some minimal graphical mess ups like using both the smw and smb3 fire flowers. I also didn’t like the lack of doors, but at least you kinda showed where they should be. I wouldn’t expect every single player to get that right away the first time playing through. Going back to the simplicity though, the level doesn’t really have much to make it stand out honestly. Like I see the Undertale stuff, but the gameplay itself was lacking and felt boring in a sense. The level looked nice too as far as atmosphere, but some NPC variety would help it out. So overall I’d say this is a mediocre level at best that I probably wouldn’t play again anytime soon. I do appreciate the references at least.

3.9/10

Entry 4: There is a Party at a Destructive Factory! It's Dangerous! by RoundPiplup

I like the music and the graphics look nice. There was some mistakes like the giant goomba effect coming out of nowhere, and some of the NPCs looked pretty silly too though. I’m gonna jump the gun and say there’s waaaay too much talking and explaining. It’s simply hard to grab a player with so much dialogue in SMBX. A majority of the time the player will skip over this and just play the level, and I don’t blame them. People care more about playing the level than the actual story. That’s why all Mario stories are simple and kinda lame in the main nintendo games (I still love the games nonetheless and obviously the story doesn’t matter as much for them when the gameplay makes up for it). Anyway the level was challenging, but fun outside of the excessive dialogue. The boss battle could’ve been a little more interesting; for most of it I was literally just spin jumping in place to kill the enemies coming at me so you’ll need to do better on that. Removing the dialogue would help the level, but overall it’s pretty mediocre.

3.6/10

Entry 5: Postgame Chapter Promo 999 by Ness-Wednesday

The intro sequence was kinda nice. Unlike most levels with dialogue, you force it and use it in a way that’s at least kind of engaging. You’re in danger and the Mario pimp squad needs to save you. The level itself looks pretty good, but the invisible blocks are a killjoy. I liked how the level was structured in that first area (not the cutscene section, the part after), but then you throw that away afterwards with the invisible block section. Even then, the first section has a lot of graphical errors with cutoffs and a lot of blocks and bgos merging poorly. You can get stuck in one part of the level with the koopa shell and switch, and a lot of the level was structured pretty randomly too. Furthermore the level dragged on for a long time with its story. The boss was also extremely ridiculous to deal with it. Overall the level is left as a mess, and it was hard to truly enjoy it in any parts of it.

2.2/10

Entry 1

Entry 1: Blinking Blitz

The Review:

This level is quite interesting, and it was nice to see the flashing lights. I liked the science with the level where when you showed them under white light, you reversed it to the scientific opposite. such as when cyan turned to magenta. The level did have a cheap-death area where a psuedo-snake-block is used. it was interesting to see, but it was short and had nothing to it. When You get to the second half of the level, the auto-scroll does not stop which leads to a very nice and scary gimmick. The only thing I dislike about this level is that it is to short, the cutoff the flashlight makes on theexit door, and that the flashlight does look very poorly drawn.

Additional Remarks:

The colored squares are sometimes two pixels to big on all sides, cause the bottom two pixles of Mario (or the player if not Mario) being covered up.

Final Score:

5/10

Entry 4

Entry 4: There is a Party at a Destructive Factory! It's Dangerous!

The Review:

This level was quite fun, it had a combination of Emral's tileset and Airship's tilesets in a nice way. The way the lasers are used are creative as well. The things that are used here that are downers are the broken mask on the boom-boom, the enemy gauntlet at the end, and the excessive dialog. The dialog makes the level a little more annoying, but oh well.

Additional Remarks:

The lasers were a nice touch, and the moving layers were done to well. Mettaton's theme is a weird choice though. I guess it was made by "Afraid of Heigts"

Final Score:

4/10

Entry 5

Entry 5: Postgame Chapter Promo 999

The Review:

This level is insanly long, and has story. The fact you can stand on the bottom of a sizable is confusing without knowing about it. The random underwater section was a bit random as well. Using the bombs to trigger the change is a bad choice as well. If you hit the switch with the koopashell, then you are stuck in the level perminately. The boss fight directly after the checkpoint is also cheap. If you lose your fireflower at any point except the final form, you are pretty much lost. Also, all of the Animal Crossing characters are not fitting in with the rest of the SMBX graphics. Their were also a bossfight at the end that was scary when playing it, yet not that bad. The second form of the first bossfight has a chance of being inpossible if the boss lands on the vase.

Additional Remarks:

Ness-Wednesday, you should not put your name on any of the files. The "Nuclear Gas", was it supposed to apeal to me?

Final Score:

1/10
Sanct
Spoiler: show
Entry 1
This level is really short, and 2/3 of it are a slow boring autoscroll section. The snake block in the autoscroll section could use some kind of sign that it's gonna
start because it killed me unfairly the first time since I didn't have time to react. The flashlight gimmick is a novel idea but it's executed in a really boring way.
3.5/10

Entry 2
The end is stolen.
0/10

Entry 3
This level is pretty short, really just average, nothing new. It's pretty fun and doesn't have any flaws that stand out. It took me a while to figure out that those
areas with the "pillars" were supposed to be doors but other than that the level is fine if a bit on the short side.
5/10

Entry 4
It takes longer to read the (not funny at all) textboxes than to finish the level itself.
3/10

Entry 5
This level started out good but then it started going downhill, FAST. That invisible floor/mirror section is awful, the autoscroll makes it even worse.
The moving spikes wait for too long and go down too fast. the boss after the checkpoint is ridiculous and the ground that disappears goes way too fast to give you
proper reaction time.
1/10
PROX
Spoiler: show
Blinking Blitz: 5/10

This level was really cool, but it was also very short and ended very abruptly. I guess that's the whole reason why I gave
the level the score I did. I thought the blinking effects were very cool and the gimmicks used were just awesome, and there
was so much potential to these gimmicks, but it was basically wasted because they weren't built up at all. They just came and
went basically. I'm pretty disappointed, but I will say that it was a very cool concept. It must have taken ages to pull off.
This level had no npcs in it at all either, and the first section was a little dull. Aside from that, this level was pretty
charming.

Funky Underwater Park: Disqualified

Corrupted Dataway: 3/10

Well... I will say that there are some unique concepts, but aside from that, this level wasn't tested very well.
I got stuck so many times it was ridiculous. Also it took me a while to figure out that there were doors in this level.
At first, I thought they were dead ends, but then I ended up entering a blank spot and then eventually figured it out; however,
it took some time to figure it out. There were other times where I would hit a switch and it would cause a platform to rise and fall.
I didn't even know they would do that in the first place and I couldn't progress because I ended up hitting a switch I wasn't
supposed to hit. You should never assume that the player can read your mind when playing a level. Either make it obvious, give out
hints, or just simply explain if the player will never have any idea.

There is a Party at a Destructive Factory! It's Dangerous!: 5/10

I thought this level was ok at best. It had some creative ideas and there were some very cleverly placed npc placements,
but for the most part, it was just enemy spam. I did like the moving layers and how they were executed though. The form boss
was ok. It wasn't really anything special, but it was decent. I don't really have anything else to say about this level. I
found it funny that it didn't really take itself very seriously lol. Also when playing this level, don't talk to the mushroom
with the question mark on it unless you really enjoy reading text!

Postgame Chapter Promo 999: 4/10

You had good ideas...they just weren't executed well. First off, the intro was annoying to deal with. It was cool, but I had to constantly rewatch it after dying.
Second, that npc that appears and disappears and shoots magic at you was really inconvenient. The way it was placed made it so difficult to react to it because
after making the jump, the NPC is basically in your face and by the time you realise what it is, it's too late and you get hit. It turned out to be a Larry NPC too.
I also had little space to maneuver and avoid its attacks. Third, the invisible scrolling section would have been cool if it wasn't so difficult. After that,
I thought things would have been better, but so much happened in the level that I couldn't even keep track of what was going on. I ended up
questioning the point of the level many times while playing it. I will applaud you for using Scatman at the end though. :P The boss was a pain though.
If you don't have a fire flower, you're gonna have a very hard time beating the boss. You had interesting ideas, but they just didn't work out unfortunately.

Ness-Wednesday

Spoiler: show
Entry 3/5:

5.40

May I start by saying that this had nicely done graphics and the choices in this are good, welp for the tileset that is but the gameplay could've been more fun than it was, as I found a little unfair and back to fair gameplay to be a little too common.
There are times when platforms shouldn't have at all despawn just to make you do a hard to reach jump.
You shouldn't make secrets part of the main level, there is a reason why bonuses exist, also there are times when it a little too cramped, but the enemy placement was pretty good.
Dude, if you opened this a little more and didn't have to make layers disappear unreasonably after entering a section, this could've been more fun.
Also next time put a graphic over every door location because no one will know where you can find a door warp unless you told them where they were, or at least put a door bgo.
Lastly, the last section seems to look a little messy because of the slope placement, and there being too many coins on the screen, but otherwise this could've been very good, but like I said this needs to be more opened and fair to play.
The Funky Fresh Final Results:
Spoiler: show
Afraid of the Heights - 4.525/10
MECHDRAGON777 (Chara) - 4.325/10
Round Piplup - 3.9
Ness-Wednesday - 2.05
litchh - Disquallified
Our final results have scores being really close overall. Congrats to Afraid of the Heights for the win!
Thank you all for participating and judging, and I hope to see you all in next year's round of contests!

Yeah that's fine. I didn't add too many ideas to this, so cyberspace is definitely a good one to use.

I'm also gonna say oldies music is a definite yes too for anyone that's up for that. You can choose any theme too, so more than one person can claim each one.

The Thwomp King, I was thinking if the level MUST be disco themed or any big party themed or it can be some normal Mario levels with funky music.
