Transition Tiles???

Postby loop13 » Thu Nov 24, 2016 10:46 pm

I am wondering how to make transition tiles. There is another thread, but it is old.
Anyway I am talking about tiles that connect two different tilesets (i.e. wood --> cave).
How do you create them?

Wood to cave would be interesting, could be harder to pull off due to the vastly different fill tiles though. But basically you'd need to make a tile which seamlessly blends both terrains into one. For that you will need Paint.Net for sure. The easiest way to do it, is to place both tiles next to each other and edit the pixels so that they appear to mix. I'll make an example to help explain it better.

EDIT:

Okay, not the greatest pixel art, but you get the idea. Having a direct cutoff between the two tiles looks bad, but by overlapping the grass and rocks with the wood to break up the abrupt endings of both tiles, you end up with a more seamless merge between surfaces.

That's really great! Well, the tile told me the basic idea. Thanks!

Basically you would have to do the same thing with any transition between two separate tiles of any theme. It's just a matter of finding the best way of showing the transition. For Grass to Ice you'd probably use a blue/white palette to introduce a snowy texture into the grass. Starting more so as a small amount of speckling before becoming completely white to indicate a loss of grass under a layer of snow.
