SMBX 2.0 Has Too Many Redundant Characters

Postby Sapphire Bullet Bill » Sun Feb 12, 2017 1:56 pm

Anybody else feel this way?
I think 5 characters is enough, considering I ALWAYS play as Mario.
Now they are adding Rosalina, Bowser, Megaman, Wario, and frickin' Ninja Bomberman, like WTF? WHY?!?
The sooner I die, the better.

I don't feel that way, having more characters introduces variety and a new feel. If you were restricted to just five, it would get old after a while. A reason I think all of those characters were added, was for a bigger selection to attract more users. Why would you always play as Mario anyways? Wouldn't you want to play as Bowser? People wanted this for a reason.

You're right, but you shouldn't mention it or you'll trigger the devs.

You don't have to use them if you don't want to. Just because you feel as though there are some redundant characters in version 2.0, it doesn't mean that they have to cut them out for the final release. To be honest, I actually like the variety, and it may inspire more types of levels based around those new characters.

I agree that the quantity of characters is absurd, yet I strongly encourage you to toy around with the options the game provides you with. You don't even have to try out any of the new characters, just getting a feel for designing around or playing with Toad or Link can be a fun experience.

I remember that changing the player's hitbox was very hoped before.
But anyway, in 90% of SMBX video, you'll see mario as player.
This is why I don't want to create characters (except if it's for a level or episode) because it will be rarely played, I can give you an example : Link, which is a very different character, but He's rarely played.

Just because they are there, doesn't mean you have to use them if you don't like them. I like some of them though, like Ninja Bomberman, Samus, and Uncle Broadsword, and it opens up a lot of possiblities for new level design ideas if one is up to it. They're a lot of fun if you give them a chance

That's Why 2.0 Mainly focus On New Characters instead of New NPC.

Work has been put into extending the NPC array though and there is already Magikoopa and other NPCs have been worked on too as prototypes that can be included after the NPC array has been extended with IDs 301+. More world map features are WIP too. Up to this point though, the focus does seem to have been on new characters, however I think it is worthwhile to have done so

The main focus definitely isn't new characters anymore, which honestly is for the better.

I really like that the game will have even more playable characters in the future, because I don't know about you, but I'm getting a bit tired of using Mario, and even tired of the five main ones.

Why not? New characters means more possibilities and level gimmicks.

SMBX 2.0 will be incredible, new elements, new cool characters (i don't liked the sword one and Snake, but one thing: quantity is not quality, if there be much characters, some will be rarely be used, and effort for nothing), there will be more gimmicks. It's cool that the community is going a bit away of Mario things and making new things (But i prefer when the community focused in more Mario things). My hype train departed since when 2.0 announced and i'm waiting for the train on the day of the launch of the full version, to make cool levels, gimmicks and test new things. I didn't played 2.0 Beta because i don't want try something incomplete and keep my expectations.

This is an understandable concern from Sapphire, and I've said many times already that the quantity shouldn't be extended any further, because it would really be too much of a good thing.

Still using the legacy editor? Get SMBX2 and PGE, it will improve your experience significantly. Here's why.

And overdoing it would eventually leave out characters that are rarely used, leaving only the most popular chosen ones anyways.

Well, those extra characters were added to add more variety to the whole game, compare to the original version. GOSH!!!

I agree that no more characters are needed and if you want a character, you can use some Lua code to do so
