In which part do you have most fun when designing a level?

Postby Eri7 » Fri Nov 16, 2018 9:33 am

Inspired by "In which part do you have most fun when designing a project" topic, i created this one.
So i have the most fun during the blocking phase(If you don't know what "blocking" means, its basically starting the level first with the gimmicks and layout while using as minimal resourses as possible to make the blocking phase easier and faster to do).
Blocking doesn't take that much time to do and you have the freedom of easily testing stuff and easily changing the layout if needed.
I also have the most fun when i gather graphics for my levels.
Extra question:
In which part do you have least fun when designing a level?
The least fun is when you have to create a lot of complicated stuff in levels which require a lot of testing or a lot of work to get them right.
For example, making a cutscene.

In my opinion, the most fun part is seeing the hard part done (the part where you mentioned testing things over and over to get them right). Seeing your work and showing it to other people makes you feel very appreciated. On the other hand, the least fun part is when you have no idea how to continue a level and you have to do some research to do good continuity and keep the level fun and challenging; While this is the basis for level designing, it is, in my opinion, one of the least fun - and most overwhelming - phases and parts of designing a level. Mastering this technique is one of my greatest challenges as of now.

For me it's adding in the details. I really like adding in details to make levels feel a lot more special and unique. I also enjoy finding awesome/good music for a level, that makes a level more fun imo.

My favorite part is the successful synthesis of all the individual aspects. When your gimmicks line up perfectly with your atmosphere in a test run; that moment is the single greatest for me in designing. It also serves as a motivation, a sort of proof that you're headed in the right direction.

So in my opinion, the most fun part when designing a level is taking my time on developing a level by making some ideas from scratch to see what would my level design look like in the actual level. And thinking of some good gimmicks for a level and a challange too, I also enjoy making some secrets for some of my levels.

Most fun - thinking up some interesting layouts for gimmicks, the environment etc.
Least fun - actually coming up with the gimmick you will use in a level, especially if you want a unique one in each level. This is more of a "hardest part" than a "least fun" though.

My mentality is that a level only starts existing once ideas for it are there. Solid, mechanical ideas. Nothing vague like "grassland", cause you can fit anything into that. If citrus fruit inspires me I rush ahead to make a level about citrus fruit. Worlds and set level amounts are a bad idea for hobby projects cause they require you to potentially do unfun stuff just to meet numbers you set yourself.

The most fun part for me is easily designing the level, especially when I have a certain idea in mind for the level itself going into the design. My least favorite is usually decor, though that mostly comes down to a lot of tilesets I use having little aesthetic touches in the ground itself, and having to randomly dot those around. It makes the level look much better, but is just a pain to do sometimes.

this is so true i want to undo my entire list now sos
yet i still fail to come up with average-or-greater uses for gimmicks

the most fun for me is making up ideas for a level and testing it out. the least fun for me is actually designing the level since I will usually try my best to put effort and time into the levels I make which is time consuming for me and I get pretty tired afterwards.
Check out this big neat project coming soon to smbx2 beta4!

Probably thinking of gimmick for the level, or thinking about the level idea. Realizing is fun as well though.

It depends on the kind of level. I really enjoy the further planning phase and music selection for the diffrent areas. Another Favorite part of me is when I try somethink really unique like a special moving block segment. Yet another good part of course is the making of a Boss, if there is one. Since I'm a Master of Custom Characters I of course aswell have a bunch of Ideas what I can do and who's the enemy. A Dialog scene is also always Nice. I as an Example really enjoyed writing the Dialog in my closed project - The Zombie Project. Even if this Game almost had nothing but Dialog as a Story Game, it was never boring. In a scene where the Group escapes, as an Example, the Player had the task to warn 2 Members (Luis and Morton Koopa). While Luis was set as an Activator to even progress, Morton could get left behind which gave the Other Characters diffrent dialoges.

I have the most fun while thinking of the ideas for my level and planning the layout of it at the very beginning. My least favorite part is finding the right graphics.

IIRC the most fun when I designing a level is choosing the graphics and adding details into the level.

Still not sure about this one bc I haven't make any SMBX levels since mid 2017

Worst part is constructing the CGFX folder.
Best part is the final testing. (checking if things line up right and similar stuff)

For me it's one of the best parts because while doing that, I start to imagine how the level should be

You start imagining how the level should be while finding graphics for it? How can you find graphics if there is no concrete idea for the level yet? Or are you aimlessly searching and seeing what might look nice before considering what you want the level to play like? Seems a bit backwards..
