Has anyone else noticed that there are seemingly no vanilla episodes for SMBX? (episodes without custom graphics or music) unless I am mistaken. I think they're pretty cool episodes, but I haven't seen one turn up since like 2010.

Why would anyone want to play a vanilla episode. Of course if it's well designed then it will be worth playing but outside of that, I can't really find a reason to play vanilla episodes.

No custom graphics anywhere is already a major handicap but no custom MUSIC hurts even more.
Still using the legacy editor? Get SMBX2 and PGE, it will improve your experience significantly. Here's why. And remember, Yoshis are tools to be used and discarded.

Well, the reason why there's less & less Vanilla levels/episodes every year is either:
- People wanted to add some variety to the levels and episodes, other than just the default graphics & music
- Many members are just too Tired of SMB3 graphics

TGCA and the original Princess Cliche were both vanilla episodes and the limitations of the editor essentially demanded that the designer used their creativity more, the use of custom graphics makes it all too easy, while a great advantage, is ironically MORE limiting as opposed to creativity by merging GFX styles from the default engine.

Same here, but I think the people takes advantage of the current SMBX possibilities, to make a better episode.
Although, probably I will make one in the future, and will be in 1.3 and that but I will keep it vanilla (no custom graphics, no custom music).

I guess that means the only people who would appreciate a vanilla episode who be old-school fans like me. I have no problem playing a vanilla level every so often in an episode just to go back to SMB's roots, including levels that use retro 8-bit graphics.
Need serious help with Lua based features

I think a lot of people could enjoy the gameplay if it was done well enough, old school fan or not

That is why for the release of Beta 4 there should be a vanilla contest for it where you can only use the default features of Beta 4 (although maybe with the option of having custom music so the music doesn't get to repetitive).

Having custom music kinda ruins it though in that the idea of vanilla is to just submit a level file with no additional assets, just the file itself.
Either I or someone else will be hosting an official vanilla contest come Beta4, which has been planned to happen for a while

I'll admit.
Nobody does this because it's boring.
"Oh no! Bowser's taken each for the 2462893642th time! Save her Mario!"

Fair point, would be more ethic without having no custom music. When the time comes I may join in that contest since it has been a long time since the last SMBX vanilla contest and with Beta 4 adding in new features it should be interesting to make levels for it even with all the default stuff. Although I wonder how SMBX is going to handle a chocolate contest when the time comes.

I believe the VLDC and CLDC contests on SMWC are essentially: No external addons except for music. Only custom stuff allowed being music and by merging pieces of graphics together to make something. I believe CLDC (Chocolate Level Design Contest) allows ASM, Xtra graphics, and the like. In SMBX terms, I would imagine a Chocolate contest would be like the past twelve community contests. (Except with lua allowed as well.) Change Xtra Graphics to Custom Graphics, and ASM to Lua and then you get a nice conversion in my book.
