Which design of levels is your favorite?

Postby Nadav » Thu Sep 05, 2019 3:52 am

My is forest or jungle levels, that's why I usually invest at them and they are the best from my other levels that are not forest, jungle
So what's your favorite design of level?

I like levels that have a clear gimmick, with charming custom assets, with an ideal sense of exploration, may as well enhanced with lua scripts.

Well, I like snow-themed levels. But my favorite kind of levels are the ones with a cool concept both in the gameplay an aesthetics. A plot also would not be bad

To be honest I don't like maze levels that much

I have no particular favorite theme but I have a theme that I definitely hate, namely laboratory levels.

Still using the legacy editor? Get SMBX2 and PGE, it will improve your experience significantly. Here's why. And remember, Yoshis are tools to be used and discarded.

I absolutely fucking despise levels that are ridiculously large, spammed with bgos, and are usually 10 minutes long. It makes it an absolute eyesore to look at. And sadly these are called "good levels" by standard. Like holy crap. Looking at this makes me want to hurl. No offense to the people who made these. However I love levels that are unique on its own, is nice and linear, no bgo/enemy spam, has an interesting and fun gimmick and challenge, and doesn’t try too hard to look good. I like any kind look of levels for that.

there's no problem with larger level length as long as the level has good stuff to offer and as long as you can progress smoothly, i.e. fair difficulty and checkpoints. Granted opinions largely differ on the first screen and it feels like overkill. What's wrong with the second screen though? Are you against decorations or what?

The first picture is supposed to be an example of bgo and decoration spam and the second picture is supposed to show a level that is pointlessly expansive for no reason what so ever. I’m not against bgos and decoration but just the over use of it. A large, expansive level can be good if it has some sort of effect of progression of the level and has some form of challenge. However having multiple spaces that Are pointlessly there just to place a couple of coins and npcs Is bad design. Especially if it takes up most of the level. Hopefully I got my point across.

You did, it's just that you've been quick at dismissing things as "pointless".

No clue why you reuploaded the image to postimg, since my deviantart account serves nicely as a "museum" for it already :p
The kind of design you're referring to is often cheekily called "tropical level design" because it was most prominently used and developed by people from tropical regions on the planet back in the day.

As for me, I quite enjoy good levels.

2014 era joke levels

I like levels that do a good job focusing on a mechanic (or a combination of a few) and come up with interesting challenges using them that progressively get more complex and challenging (while of course having enough checkpoints to make sure it's not infuriatingly difficult to complete).

I also like levels that are built around a sort of story and showcase more of the purely artistic elements of levels, such as the atmosphere. These are rare and a well executed ones are rarer, but they're pretty special when they work.
