Also that means that the Dragon coins are only worth anything if you collect them all and don't die after a checkpoint. SMW stars on the other hand are limited to 1 per section which can limit where you place them. They also move up and down which can transform certain good placements of these into bad placements because of aesthetics. And if you want to create a challenge after getting the star to return to the main path, then the fact that death allows you to keep star coins even if they collected since a checkpoint can be exploited which defeats the purpose of having such a challenge. I know that 1.4 has star coins but since I don't play it I don't know their potential and what their purpose is in a level and episode, but from what I have seen they are permanently counted but are separated from stars.

If star coins are coming to 2.0, how will they work?

Star Coins with mechanics effectively identical to the New Super Mario Bros. series can be effectively implemented even in 1.3 without Lua, by having all 3 on a single layer, and having a SMW star at the end of the level show when there are no more objects in that layer. It's not perfect since the player's star coin progress isn't saved and they must collect a star at the end, but it's pretty close.

I guess star coins inside blocks, grass, generators, lakitus, etc should not count. Make it so starcoins are grey by default, but if they are valid they are yellow.

If it were me, I'd just allow for any unfair thing the community would see fit to do with a new feature I add in. It is a bit of extra work, but it would avoid possible crashes in case someone tries and fails to force such a scenario. That's the charm of SMBX over Super Mario Maker, I think. It has limitations only due to technical reasons. Not practical. I am looking forward to the weird things that'll occur in Beta 4 if it comes in my lifetime.
