Treehouse Terror

Postby Pan » Wed Mar 06, 2019 4:35 am

Treehouse Terror

This is a battlegame in a treehouse. It is fully equipped with trees, mountains and even a volcano! In short, a complete chaos.

Lava Dragon

This is another battle game, with more chaos so it is even better!
Spoiler: show
There is a dragon made of lava that wants to kill both players.
Warning: this was one of the first battlegames I made.

(The game looks really bad, but that doesn't make it less fun)

Oh, so are these stages meant for Battle Mode? You don't find a lot around.

Yeah, it's weird I was thinking about battle mode a few days ago, and now I see this post.

That's because most SMBX users usually don't live close enough to actually play this mode together, considering online mode doesn't work. If SMBX 2.0 manages to pull that off we could actually play these any day though.

Or you can just use Parsec to be able to play together.

Hey Pan, I just had a look at your level. Personally I've never played SMBX in battle mode but I think your level has waaay too much stuff going on.

- Enemies are spawning so quickly and literally out of nowhere. Wouldn't it make more sense for them to get out of pipes?
- Speaking of enemies, there are TONS of them everywhere on the screen! I feel like a lot of them have to be removed, otherwise players would get hit every few seconds or so and it's frustrating, even though there are plenty of power-ups around.
- Maybe not advisable to have so many chasing Koopas in a battle mode level. One or two max should do and maybe they can spawn at longer intervals (once every 10-15 sec)?

+ I like the idea of having a treehouse as I don't think I've seen a proper one in SMBX before...
+ I also like that there are Yoshis available as well as various power-ups. Perhaps there are way too many power-ups though.
+ I find it interesting that some time after you start, the level starts flooding.
- However, this creates graphic cut-offs with the grass background.

* Is this meant to be a battle only between Mario and Luigi or would it include other characters like Link, Peach and Toad?

You've already described your own level as "complete chaos" so you're likely aware of the visual overload that it has. I would suggest removing the majority of enemies from the screen and maybe make the rest of them spawn at longer intervals out of pipes so that their appearance can be telegraphed at least? I like the waterfall and volcano so maybe fish can spawn out of the waterfall while Podoboos can do the same with the volcano... The flooding effect was unexpected and a nice gimmick but be mindful of graphic cut-offs. As an overall battle mode level, I give this a 5/10.

Haha nice these are just a few of my fist battle games.
But what do you think of the gigantic LAVA DRAGON?

At the moment I am making an episode that will look much better.

I only briefly played the lava dragon level. Once again, I found it to have way too many things going on. I also don't know how you're supposed to survive that lava once it rises all the way up... The lava doesn't quite look like a dragon, I would've said more of a swan or duck really :? There are many distracting and unnecessary enemies in my opinion (e.g. Lakitu, Bowser) as well as quite a few cut-offs with those orange vines.

If you want to keep the verticality element, I would recommend getting rid of a lot of enemies and making the lava rise to a certain point, then downwards. Or maybe the whole battle arena can be smaller and more horizontal with hanging blocks/platforms and the lava can periodically go up and down, forcing the players to use the hanging platforms/blocks above while waiting for the lava to go down. Hope this is making sense.

Not sure I can give the lava dragon level a rating but it did not impress me at all, I'm afraid.

Are you taking my feedback seriously at all? I did spend time testing both your levels and writing down my opinion so I don't feel that this is a very appropriate response...

Yeah sorry, but it's just that these games are my first so don't blame me of bad quality... I made them long time ago but I just wanted to post something.

But thanks for the feedback, I think 5/10 is still quite high for the quality of my battle game.

By the way did you play Treehouse Terror until the vulcano eruption too? I only saw feedback about the water.
