The person in question bailed out because of your deadlines. Why do you impose such strict requirements? You won't convince anyone to join such an important position, or at best they will rush their levels because of this, which you don't want either. Just let yourself and your team develop the project without being eager on getting it done in a quick timeframe. If a team member is ignoring their job, you'll notice anyway. A team member follows a common goal together with you, they are not your employee, they should still have space for other focuses. This is just creating an environment of discomfort leading to a worse outcome. The deadline for betatesting proves obsolete anyway because of e.g. hindrances that require a patch. Granted I wished the person would have talked to you before about leaving but I can clearly see why.

You have got some fantastic work already, and looking by the amount of stars and worlds planned you're already more than 50% done right? Which is a great position? Just keep moving on?

Yeah if stuff don't work out with your team then you should continue the development alone until you either get help again or finish your episode. And deadlines are bad , i never managed to finish any of my deadlines so i don't like them being a thing in smbx projects. Also you have to always expect to finish your project alone , if someone helps you with it , then great , consider it an addition but never be depended on them in order to finish your project because it will slow you down a lot, so yeah good luck , maybe you will get more people to help you in the future.

I hadn't realized they were that strict because i feel like 2 weeks is plenty of time to get a level done, but i guess it isn't?

The reason i wanted to pick up the pace on this is that this project has been in development for nearly 3 years and if i'm working at a rate as slow as 9-10 levels a year, this project wouldn't get finished for another 5+ years which i wouldn't really want.

To be fair, the reason for me giving people generally two weeks to finish one level is because i considered it enough time to fit other focuses in with it and hadn't realized it was such a strict deadline. And the reason for me having deadlines is the fact that i've had plenty of experience, and this includes myself, is that if you don't sent some sort of deadline to get things done, you commonly won't, i learned that from this thread, which even tells you to make deadlines and keep them, however i can see where you'd be coming from since it does also say that realistically, you won't end up keeping them, so i'm going to compromise on this. i'm not going to make deadlines to get things done, however i'll try to encourage that we get it done around that point, even if we don't usually end up finishing it by that exact date.
Cedur wrote: The deadline for betatesting proves obsolete anyway because of e.g. hindrances that require a patch. Granted I wished the person would have talked to you before about leaving but I can clearly see why.
I've caught on that much
Cedur wrote: You have got some fantastic work already, and looking by the amount of stars and worlds planned you're already more than 50% done right? Which is a great position? Just keep moving on?
Well, not exactly, it's more of being able to be curved to around how many levels are finished, which is around something a bit over 30, however i do have plenty of ideas for levels so it's fine in that sense. however, professional lunalua programmers are still something that are needed as i've tried to learn lunalua for over a year and just can't.
Eri7 wrote: Yeah if stuff don't work out with your team then you should continue the development alone until you either get help again or finish your episode.
The issue however is that i couldn't finish an episode this big alone realistically.
Eri7 wrote: And deadlines are bad , i never managed to finish any of my deadlines so i don't like them being a thing in smbx projects.
It's not necessarily that their bad, it's just that alot of people, and that includes my self, realistically don't keep them.
Eri7 wrote: Also you have to always expect to finish your project alone , if someone helps you with it , then great , consider it an addition but never be depended on them in order to finish your project because it will slow you down a lot,
That is true, i guess i sorta forgot about that for awhile.

For those of you not aware, this project isn't dead as you may think, i'm mainly just awaiting for Beta 4's release before getting back to work on it,
once that comes out, development will resume, therefore, this project is going on an official hiatus until it's ready.

Re: The Mosaic Group's Journey(The Truth On The Future Of The Project)

Postby Mosaic » Thu Sep 03, 2020 1:17 pm

Okay, so, this is something that I've been meaning to inform anyone waiting on this project to come out for awhile now, but I think it's about time
that I explained why this project has been so insanely inactive.

It all started with a number of different issues I had on the project, these issues, if you're wondering what they were, were all elaborated on in alot of detail in a post made on my discord server. While I won't copy it all word for word, these were basically my issues.

IRL Things: Months back when I made the post, I was rather busy with life, even now within just a few weeks, i'm going to be very busy with it in general(Online College, Rip). And as such it'll leave less time for other things, like this project.

My Computer was just...Bad: Along with this, I had a different computer, a very bad one at that, it ran really slow, maintaining power on it was a chore, it ran slower than a slug on a humid day, it was a pain all around to even use it to get things done. Even when I could, there was a thing I always got, this thing being...

Designer's Block and lack of motivation: This is still an issue I really struggle with, coming up with unique, fun, original ideas for level design in this was really tough too, SMBX, even with it's countless NPCs, Tilesets, Lunalua, etc. Still feels really limiting somehow tbh, which makes it tough to come up with creative, new ways to innovate and make things stand out and becomes more of a chore to do than a fun thing.

This is in combination with the fact that, maybe it's because of my hiatus tag or something, but given that I rarely get comments on this(though to be fair that also could be a result of me not updating this due to my other issues) combined with other stuff, I lack the motivation to want to work on this.

Because fun fact, I was actually playing some SMBX levels on my twitch channel recently, streamed them and everything, and got reminded how janky SMBX is to work with, which makes me think it's honestly a reason that I stopped playing the game, because, I'll play it for a fun time, but despite what the game is trying to convey, it just doesn't feel like i'm playing a mario game, but an imitation of one, Like Sonic JK lol.

Another issue is:

Lunalua: I've tried so much to learn this thing and figure it out, but I just can't, though I do have a programmer who is actually doing some things for this episode, I need to make sure I follow up with them to see if they're still willing to contuine doing programming for this(Given I even do continue this project because of what i'm going to say later on...)

And finally, and this is quite a big one, to put it simple...

I have others interests... :o

Yeah, this is probably one of the biggest reasons I haven't been doing much with SMBX lately(and probably won't unless I'm suddenly motivated to pick it up again tbh), I have a number of other things I'm alot more interested in doing rather than make two massive projects on a janky fangame designer for what is frankly a niche userbase. These include things like Writing(which you can find on my discord and the sites they're posted, which can also be found there), Minecraft PVP, Minecraft in general, Game Designing in another, non SMBX related way, and am also trying to get into streaming aswell.

So, what's the bottom line in all of this you ask? Well, here's how I'd put it, I wouldn't say this project is cancelled fore say, however, I wouldn't even call it dormant or a hiatus either. The way I'd put is that to be frank, i'm not really interested in making SMBX levels anymore, and don't know if I ever will be either.

So simply put, what's happening to The Mosaic Group's Journey?(And by inclusion Toad's SMB Adventure and any other mini projects I was working on?)

Well...I guess i'd say that for the time being, they're just not going to happen. Maybe, just maybe I'll revive these projects some day if something just really motivates to do so, but, frankly, don't get your hopes up, as something really big would have to happen to motivate me to come back, or it'd be years down the line, where what i'm wanting to do has pretty much been done.

But despite that, I thank anyone who supported this project(And any other projects i'm working on who, despite the decision in the end) stuck through with it despite that.

If you want to know more about what my plans are going foward and several of the subject on the post above in more detail, join my discord below. Thanks for reading and understanding, and have a nice day.

I've got different interests too since 3 months ...

but too bad that these levels wont be included anywhere else so it's essentially all gone to waste ...

Well you put in a good effort and you tried. That's more then a lot of people can say.

You could release your levels as single levels so people can get some closure and still play them. Just an idea.

Maybe consider giving the project to other people? That would atleast allow the project to continue without you having to worry about it anymore (this would be more ideal than doing nothing with it at all).

The reasons you gave are all very fair. This is only a fangame and tbh, this should be at the bottom of everyone's priority lists.

He didn't want the levels to be split among other projects, so I assume he wouldn't want this as well. (plus completing this project in the original sense would be a hell of a task)
