Then where's the community besides the marginally active Starmen.net?

There's a difference between a game being unknown and a community being inactive. I know about the Mother series and have even beaten the first two games, but I'm not a member of Starmen.net.
I've decided to cancel SMBXville Under Seige. After my 1st Senior year of college, I realized I wouldn't have enough time to devote to finishing my four-level episode. Apologies to those who cared.

I've mentioned this plenty of times, but a game I played that (I think) people don't really know about is Army Men: Air Attack 2. I played this game a lot when I was really young (probably at the age of four), but I sucked shit at it. It was the only game I ever owned for my original PlayStation (the grey box, not even the slim one), and eventually, my mum threw out the game and the PlayStation because no one used it, and ever since then, I've been trying to find out more about it. In fact, I only learned the name earlier this year.

I dunno if people here have ever played DOOM. No, not that DOOM, the original DOOM. It's still pretty good right now with use of enhanced ports and wads, which, while isn't like as active as Super Mario Maker content, still puts out great gems. Also DOOM mapping is deceptively easy and fun to do. Did I mention there's a mod for DOOM that makes it excessively gory and metal as hell? Also a mod to make it more like Metroid Prime? Or Halo?

I don't think that counts as a game that most people don't know exist (especially since, as you wrote, the franchise is still getting games to this day, and the original games still have an active modding community). I knew about Doom long before that DOOM was ever announced.

Quite possibly one of the greatest NES titles that never was, would have to be Mr. Gimmick! or just Gimmick! as it is known in Japan. The amount of detail in that game is mind blowing. Think Kirby's Adventure x 2. This has to be easily the one game that really pushes the limits on the NES while providing a fun adventure that is arguably even more adorable than Kirby's Adventure.

Another game I can think of, would have to be Croc: Legend of the Gobbos for PSX/PS1. While originally it was an experiment for a new Yoshi game on the Playstation, thankfully it became its own thing. While it is a somewhat harder game in some aspects, it's definitely a defining title for the Playstation 1 era, like Crash and Spyro.

Lastly, there's Blinx the Timesweeper, a forgotten gem from the Xbox and besides a very small number of Xbox games I actually enjoyed, this one stood out from the rest. The plot, the graphics, the music and the theme just stand out from rest. It's a very addictive game, and with a mere 10 minutes to complete each stage, you'll constantly find yourself on your toes, though some of the bosses *cough*Momentropolis*cough* are probably a little too over the top considering your capabilities, making leveling up your gear essential.
