Re: Super Mario Enigmatic 2 - Novaborn (SMBX 2.0)

Postby Cedur » Sat Sep 02, 2017 9:47 am

I finally tried to continue after a hiatus of several months; I got stuck at the third Link level due to underestimating his jump abilities (kek). However I haven't got much further thus far, the reversed mechanics at Groundwork are the most dizzying thing I've ever seen at SMBX. Even if the mid-pipes served as checkpoints, this would be a hell to get past. After several dozens of failed attempts, I used godmode and shadowstar cheat and then kept dying a few times from walking outside the walls. :>

Thanks for your solution videos, alwahla

Appreciate all the videos and comments. :) I'm tempted to make a version of the game that is less challenging, but I'll probably wait for SMBX 2.0 official release for that one.

I don't think that's needed (easier game), but a general update would be nice, improving some little things here and there. Maybe add a new area for timestop puzzles ;)
Check out my levels!

I apologize for this. A remake/expansion is in development and I'm hoping to have it out by the end of October. The current version has so many flaws and insufficiently designed levels that I don't want it to spread around.

If a mod wants to move this thread back to projects, that's ok.

The progress has been very slow due to hectic life situation. The best estimate I can give now is early 2019.

Finally things are progressing. This thread can be moved to projects. First post updated.

The remake:

Originally released in 2016. The episode is going through a big overhaul and is currently 40% done.

- Overall difficulty lowered
- Puzzles made simpler to look at
- Story and atmosphere less dark and more mysterious
- Most of the levels and bosses partly or completely remade
- New levels

I'm glad this has some progress! When I finally went to play it, the link was removed; but that's ok, if the episode is going to get better. Good job, and good luck!

Some new screenies and a progress update. Currently about 60% done. "Ocean Bed - Airlocks" level set has been removed and replaced by a new unique level set. In addition, many levels no longer include a key.

I'll look into it.

The remake is about 75% done. Most of the levels in the later part of the game have been created from scratch.

Introduction:

The Mushroom Kingdom had lived in peace ever since Bowser's plans for world invasion through the power of the Sacred Star were ruined by Mario and his friends. However, unnerving news from the neighboring kingdom of Shiverburn Nova reached her highness, Queen Daisy. With the royal flagship and her most trusted allies, she began the journey to confront Bowser, who had obtained a new kind of power that would ensure his superiority.

The episode begins with an assault to Bowser's palace. Can you solve the perplexing puzzles in the mysterious world of Shiverburn Nova and put an end to Bowser's plans?

Features:

* 4 playable characters (Mario, Luigi, Peach, Link)
* Over 100 levels
* Multi-phase boss fights and minibosses
* Unlimited lives
* Takes advantage of LunaLua and SMBX 2.0 features
* Main graphics by Sednaiur

The remake:

Originally released in 2016. The episode has gone through a major overhaul in 2018-2019. Some of the changes include:

* Puzzles made visually simpler and more pleasant
* Story and atmosphere changed for the lighter
* Every existing level partly or completely remade, many removed
* Plenty of completely new levels, especially in the latter half of the episode
* Many levels no longer include a key
* Added a possibility to skip a certain amount of levels
* Overall difficulty lowered
* Miniboss introduction levels made much shorter
* Music changed for all levels
* Player graphics converted to png to prevent crashing

Removed.

The episode should be played on SMBX 2.0 Beta 3.

Beta test:

As puzzle episodes require as much testing as possible, the beta test is open to anyone. Any feedback related to the episode difficulty, bugs, things that were enjoyable, things that were not enjoyable is more than welcome. Feedback is appreciated both in PMs and in this thread. The beta version is a full version of the remade episode, the final release will most likely not be much different. Please note, that the download may get taken down at any moment during the beta.

Known issues or things that will be changed for the final release:

- Star count is currently not visible on the world map
- Enemies that are present on the screen turn into coins when a star is collected (visual issue)
- Level exit doors that lead into a level that includes a star display a 0/1 text on them
- Beanstalk block graphic includes 1*1 pixels
- Arrow blocks in Haunt are placeholder graphics
- A possibility to skip story sections not yet added
- Bowser currently repeats his speech every time you enter the transformation room

Internal testing has only been done on SMBX 2.0 Beta 3. This is the recommended version to use (until Beta 4 comes out).

EDIT: Changed download to Mediafire.

I've only played the first world, and it's really good so far.
here are some minor issues I encountered other than the ones mentioned in the OP:
Spoiler: show
you can still change characters on the world map with pause + arrows.
"key can be used for different purposes" screen from the tutorial - this screen can be done in two different ways, you don't have to wait for the enemies to fall down on the spikes after picking up the key, you can just go back the original way.
haunt 1 last screen - the block disappearing effect appears near the door each time you jump for some reason.
haunt 2 first screen, upper section - you don't need to throw the shell towards the koopa in order to activate the vine block, it activates by itself when a koopa shell is thrown above it.
star gate - the number of stars counter disappears every time you talk to the toad.
Waluigi boss 1st phase - you can still damage him without using the platforms by throwing the bomb mid-air.

Very helpful information, thanks. It's so weird how blind you can become to your own levels.

The download has been changed to Mediafire (Sendspace was very slow).

Spoiler: show
just like the star gates, ocean bed timer also disappears when you talk to the toad.
not sure if this is the intended clear, but it is a lot faster: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4YsGnh-plU
EDIT: a small bug I found
Spoiler: show
warfare 2 first screen - when pressing the switch for bullets to switch sides, a random bullet generator appears above
edit: groundwork 1 - 2nd screen (the one with a poison mushroom in the bottom right corner) - you don't have to use the koopa, just stab the mushroom block in a hole and then stab it out of the hole by bouncing it off the wall. my suggestion is making the hole 2 blocks deep or something like that to avoid the exploit.
the key icon is still visible after grabbing a key, not sure if it's intentional or not, but I'd guess so since you got rid of the rest of the hub.
major bug: 4th screen of the named level, you don't have to use the mushroom block, you can just build up momentum and pull off a pixel-perfect jump to skip right to the door.
some issues I had with the 3rd Waluigi encounter:
Spoiler: show
text can be skipped with the jump button, however everywhere else you have to use the run button :p
2nd phase skulls can only be damaged with the bomb explosion, it would've been nicer if a bomb throw would count as a hit.
I'm loving the episode so far, it feels really "professional". it was also unironically the first episode I ever downloaded back in 2016(?)
