Wii U

Postby silent_ » Sat Mar 01, 2014 5:58 pm

I don't feel like constructing a colossal paragraph just discussing this, but I'll allow the rest of you to do so. Basically in this topic just discuss the Wii U - feel free to debate, express your opinions and exaggerate them if necessary. Also you can list your personal favorite games on it, least favorite, and such. Sharing videos as long as they're not random relating to the Wii U would be perfectly fine too, I believe. Otherwise, my only comment about the Wii U is that the administrators on Miiverse are strict as heck, lol.

The Wii U is a great console in my opinion, and I am an owner. Its real problem is a lack of support and games (due to a lack of support), though I'm not sure why it's gotten so little support. All the games I've played on it are really good, and the GamePad is a deceptively awesome controller.

My understanding is that a lot of big third party developers either had faulty expectations or were given false promises as to the console's accessibility for them. Given my bias towards Nintendo, I tend to lean towards the former, but objectively I think it's a mixture of both of those things.

It seems a lot of third party developers were pissed off that the design goals of the Wii U were different from that of the XBox and the PlayStation4. All these people want is to easily port their titles between the other systems and the Wii U at a minimal cost, rather than focus their attention on designing software that is meant FOR the Wii U, as Nintendo does. I think this is where the issue comes from. Not caring for ports myself, I'm okay with it, but I understand why it hurts third party support and thus the console itself. They would be more than happy to port their software if it was easy and cost-effective, but with the Wii U's architecture, it simply isn't, and it's questionable as to whether or not those ports will rake in enough cash to justify the added cost.

Arkham City: Armored Edition is an example of such a port that was made specifically for Wii U and it tanked horribly. Other developers have had similar situations, or are at least looking to those situations as a sign to stay away from the Wii U.

I can't help but my roll my eyes, as I bought the Wii U largely to get away from the communities of Microsoft and Sony—I want something that's actually different, and while I wouldn't call myself casual I just don't NEED to play videogames as if it's an addiction, so I don't care about the slow library growth, and I don't care about all of the doom-and-gloom surrounding the comment threads on Nintendo articles. I'm not interested in the story-oriented games of AAA developers when videogame stories are often still badly-written or contrived. I want the focus to remain on core gameplay. I couldn't possibly want those ports, and furthermore if I did, I'd get them on PC during online sales anyway.

I'm still holding on hope that Nintendo can turn the situation around enough to see more sales, but even in the worst case scenario we're looking at a console that will have games made SPECIFICALLY for the smaller fraction of gamers that bought Wii Us. What that actually comes down to is that more games for Wii U will actually pertain to my tastes, as I consider myself a minority in the gaming world.

There are still some developers that will support Wii U, and they're mainly independants. Those independant developers will shine in this instance because they'll pretty much have no major third party competition in the Wii U market. Games like Shovel Knight will reign supreme. I'm totally cool with that.

Also, The Wonderful 101 is pure magic. Get that game. DO IT NOW.
