Iceland: High and Low

Postby Axotic » Mon Apr 11, 2016 12:53 am

Hello everyone, today I'm posting a level I put together to have some fun and pass time. This is my very first level that I'm posting and I'm looking for solid criticism, (Don't be afraid to criticize harshly, I promise I wont cry. Maybe.).

I'm looking for tips on how I can improve my design and to understand what I did wrong. I have a strong interest/passion for SMBX level design and I decided to quickly put together my first level. I posted here because I wanted a proper review.

Review: Iceland: High and Low

Postby smartiemartie7 » Tue Apr 12, 2016 6:09 am

yuu, let's get ready to get reviewed.

Technical level design

Hmm, even though this level is more amazing if seen from a artistic point of view, it has a decent level built around it to make it come more to life.
The blocks of ice make it a choice if you want to slip around, instead of being on ice all level.
The rest of the overworld sections involve a lot of slopes, i got to be honest, I don't really get the ice theme feeling when ignoring the themed graphics. It could have been a grassy hill level.
For the inside sections... WELL DONE, it is a nice cozy cave, which is used a lot in winter levels. It feels fitting, and the secrets are also nice and small. Perfect for this type of levels.

...Also.. i don't kow in which category i would place this... so...

Yeah, the bushes do not really want to coöperate here, except the first one.

Design & Music

Ohhh here comes the big stuff.
Firstly, the coins. It might sound really nitpicky, but i think that, even though they fit, the original golden coins will also fit in with the theme. So I would prefer them instead of the blue icy coins.
Secondly, Amazing job on the coloring of the enemies, nice fresh blue on the outside and darker on the inside. Because of this i would like to see the outside koopa's lighter blue as well.(i know this is kinda personal but hey, its my review)
Also, when the purcupo enemies die... they turn into spiny's... please fix that.
You got some nice backgrounds which really fit, good job on that.
Outside of the graphics and background there is the music... and oh boy, the musical pieces you picked are great... but i would not be myself if i did not interfere with the music of a level creator.
The outside theme starts too late and the inside theme is just too silent, even though both of the problems can be fixed with a simple program as audacity they are just annoying to me.

Reason: Although I'd consider 8.1 a bit high, I'd still put it in Pretty Good so I'll approve it I guess.

Hello Smartie, thanks for the rate! It was a first level so flaws were expected (I'm sure you know this). I will fix some of the flaws as soon as I can.
