tbh, the contest is literally the only thing that's motivating me to make not-so-simple levels. And then there's monthly contests, additonal contests, hardcore-tastic contests, visually creative contests, uh... the list goes on! And then there comes to where there's too many contests.

I like the legacy editor more than PGE.

I agree on this as well. This also applies to SuperMario7, Sux and FireLink as well.
I half-way agree with this. While most of their levels end up playing the same, it doesn't necessarily mean they're BAD designers, it just means they're not all that creative.
I consider visual styles just as important as gimmicks/gameplay and general design. I not only want levels to play well, I want them to look good so the visual atmosphere enhances the other aspects.

Thing is they're seen as the best designers by the majority of the user here. If I don't like their levels, then it doesn't mean I don't like community's design.

Then talk about the aspects of their design that you dislike without mentioning their names.

In that case it isn't clash. Mixing styles isn't always clash. Clash is only when the graphics styles don't look together.

I don't like any vanilla bosses, done them too many times and if just dread seeing them at all. Even most modified versions are garbage. If it doesn't do something really good to impress me they are dull and I'd rather just skip them entirely.

I don't think that counts as controversial, most people can agree on that.

I enjoy levels I can't beat first try that don't let me try every single jump over and over again until I get it like today's "everyone is a winner" society wants us all to create

I agree. Just imagine how bad the levels of Super Mario Star Expedition would be if Chad had solely focused on gameplay instead of visuals and didn't use the many custom tilesets you can find in that episode.

That's like saying I don't care about police brutality as long as they use foam batons.

That's fine to have, but there are many long, lava and pit filled levels out here.

yeah but if you can actually die to missing a jump that's apparently bad design nowadays

Maybe it would be something if those who prefer bla ovee bla, give a point why exactly they do so. The gif image of sonic doesn't show how anything to me.
If you don't like or prefer something give a point why you do so. Or people could think you don't have any valid point and that you do that in real life also.
As for me, i like vanilla levels like from the invasion, first princess cliche and tgca more, then those levels which use a lot of cgfx,(including my own) bc vanilla levels have this nostalagic feel to me that reminds me how it all started before this whole "Use cgfx to make level good look" "No slopes? whoa 2/10 garbage" started.

The Sonic gif is supposed to be a humorous representation of me putting up a flame shield.
Also, I just prefer it, because I know where everything is and it's a lot simpler to use than PGE. I guess since everyone uses events and layers and stuff, and maybe PGE is better for that kind of stuff, but I don't use layers or events, so that's probably why.

1) I find too many levels look similar and play similar.
2) Too many mother brain bosses have ridiculously short patterns
3) There are too many levels that try to not be linear by featuring boring "switch hunts".
4) There's no exploration or cool secrets in every level/episode I've played (that's why I've built a level full of secrets and stuff like that (explorative plains))

It's not exactly an opinion but like
Last night Ignoritus showed me his youtube channel from like 2010 that prided itself with only playing really shitty episodes.
I then realized that nowadays 90% of the level forums is something that you would see on that channel
Just think about that for a bit
