I was looking up gifs of Super Paper Mario on Discord and found a bunch of gifs criticizing its story and level design, has there always been this much negativity towards it and I'm an idiot for just noticing it now, or could it be trolls abusing Tenor's gif maker?

Here's my most definitely popular and mainstream opinions:

7. Free / Open Source games should not have to support low-end PCs just because the nerds want to run Linux on their toasters.

That's true, but a bit of consideration for poor people is nice. But it's fine if that's too much for the scope of the project.

This is a very cool game that I would like to play. Thanks for sharing it with us. It reminds me a lot of another game I started playing quite recently. If you know it's called Overwatch.
