There's a difference between users and registered users that I think you're missing

the guests have always intrigued me. I used to get hundreds of them register and only use their accounts once. perhaps some are bots

Every time this happens just look at the amount of guests online. Right now we're constantly being in the 200s. Also, what's the worry? It works soon again normally.

This is probably related, never have I seen so many guests online at the same time. Most of them are probably bots.

That's the cause, hundreds of bots constantly changing pages uses a lot of resources and puts a heavy load on the servers. Not much of a point to keep bumping this thread when you get 508s tho.

Well, there were nearly 600 users online yesterday and now there is only ~50. That's actually a huge change right there, now i wonder what all those bots were doing here...
Other than the search engine bots ofcourse.

There was an overload of requests from Bots from a few particular IPs. Should be taken care of! Sorry for the annoyance this caused.

IIRC bot IPs are generally dynamic IPs

dynamic IPs are no match for a range ban on India and China

block em all in a self defense situation
