How does health & damage work?

Postby Animebryan » Sat Nov 09, 2019 11:45 pm

I'm in the process of making a custom boss & before I set it's health npc code, I need to know how damage scaling works in regards to different damage types, such as; fireballs, hammers, thrown npcs (ice blocks, vegetables, enemies, etc.). I know that SMB3 Bowser takes about 200 fireballs to kill, but it takes much fewer hits with hammers & thrown npcs which means different methods cause different amounts of damage. Does anyone know how much damage each method causes?

SMB3 Bowser takes exactly 200 fireballs, as 10 fireballs equal 1 damage.

Damage numbers are
1) integer values (fireball is always 1 damage for default enemies and bosses)
2) inconsistent (a bomb deals 10 damage to bowser, but only 3 to boom boom)
3) undefined for custom NPCs (hitting a custom npc with a fireball deals damage equal to whatever you define it as)

Yeah, I was referring to SMB3 Bowser with the word "damage".

Btw, what are the specs of SMB1 Bowser? (I know it takes 4 hits but how many fireballs?)

Are you saying I can set up damage values for each damage method for a custom npc? If so, how?

Depends on what version you're using. For versions up to 1.3.0.2, no. For 38A's Super Mario Bros X. (1.4.0 to 1.4.5) yes! You can even change the damage that different objects do for specific npc's. Versions 2.0 and higher also have health options but they're not quite as sophisticated...

This is uh... not true. You can absolutely set up a health system for your NPCs in SMBX2, configuring exactly how each item should damage things. And you can make it as sophisticated as you like. I believe you'd use onNPCHarm for this particular thing, and using that, you can just set it up so every form of harm does 1 damage to the NPC, or you can make it as complicated as attacking it with a fireball from above doing more damage than hitting it from the side. You have a lot of control over this with SMBX2's systems.
