Welcome one of the first World Map Design Contests ever!
Runtime: December 7th, 2020 - January 3rd, 2021 EST

What is this contest about?
As the name already says, this contest is all about world map design! This means that you can submit a world map to be judged!

Results:

Code: Select all

--- DeluxeMario - SMBX ---
The only 38A submission, and unfortunately not a very good one. This world map is way too empty - the first area lacks variety in terms of scenery and the second area feels like it was only made to meet the 10 level requirement.
This world map gets 1/10 points from me.

--- ClothPocket - Mountain Climb ---
This world map left me uncertain. Aesthetically, it has a good look to it and I adore the tilesets used for this world map. However, this world map also features some weird path transitions, especially the segue to some of the mountains feels kind of off.
Aside from this, the world map feels kind of unfinished. It transitions between two areas, which is usually fine, but in this case, something doesn't feel right - as if the creator wanted to make the area bigger but just left it as it was. Nonetheless, this map was decent, so I reward it with 8 out of 10 points.

--- 8luestorm - Colorful Craftlands ---
The last world map I received, and the best one. Aside from a few minor cutoffs at the upper left corner of the map, I don't really have anything to criticize about this world map. The graphics are well-done and the music choice makes the map feel complete.
This is why I reward this world map with 9.75 out of 10 points.

RULES
[01]
This is a world map contest. You are allowed to submit custom world maps inside levels, but no HUB levels.
[02]
You may submit up to three world maps. Collaboration is allowed.
[03]
Your world map is supposed to have 10-30 level points, not including warps.
[04]
The total amount of warp points is not allowed to exceed the total amount of level points.
[05]
In order to decrease the total file size, please make sure to remove unused assets. Music files should not be longer than 5 minutes. It is advised to use looped music files.
[0]
Unless you're making a custom world map in the level editor, do not use level files (.lvl/.lvlx). If you include warps, use world map warps instead.
[07]
Any major version of SMBX is allowed (legacy SMBX, 38A, SMBX2, SMR).
[08]
No encrypted levels/world maps.
[09]
You may not disable cheats for your map.
[10]
You may not submit a world map that wasn't made by you. Also, already released maps are not allowed.
How to submit: show
Your folder is supposed to include the following files/folders:
-Your map's folder (including all graphic/music files)
-A readme file (.txt) including:
-Your prefered username
-Your World's name
-The version your world is meant to be played on (legacy/1.4.4/1.4.5/X2/SMR)
-Credits for custom graphics and custom music

JUDGING
-The judge is:
DerEric
-Judging relies only on aesthetics. Gameplay Flaws (too long paths, broken warps, etc.) will result in a point deduction.
-Judges will use the cheat code imtiredofallthiswalking in order to judge the world map.
-Please keep in mind that a large world map doesn't get more points just for being a large world map.

REWARDS
You will get a special badge that you can put in your signature for participating. First, second and third place will receive a personalized badge (gold/silver/bronze) with their name on it.

RELEASE
All submissions will be put into a .zip file and be released after the results have been published.

Good luck!

Usually this is my kind of deal. I will be in as I usually host these and are not usually allowed to enter. I have a complaint though. Why is there a maximum of 30 levels on the map?

If I were to guess, it's the theme of the contest (small and many submissions, rather than large and few). And to limit people from exploiting the absence of a limit.

Sounds interesting. I might participate, but we'll see

RULES UPDATE! WMDC 2020

There have been two additions to the rules:
-There may not be more warp points than levels in your map. (Thanks to Enjl for pointing this out to me)
-Obvious rule: You may not submit world maps not made by you or already released world maps.

I tried to encourage people not to create a way too large world map (or a 2 level one, for that matter) so they can focus on quality instead.

World Map Design Contest - Submission Period has started!

With the submission period starting, I decided to release a short trailer for the contest.

Also, the discord server initially intended for judging only has been made into a server for general discussion regarding the contest, including a channel for submissions. If you want, feel free to join the server at any time. Join here!
Joining is not required in any way, it is completely optional.

Aside from that, I'm still looking for one or two additional judges!

I would have entered if I had a tileset. If there are more than one submission, I can judge though.

I see. Maybe you should avoid throwing around Deadlines, until
you have a few more. It sounds a little, well.. desperate.

Just a friendly hint :). Oh Yeah, almost forgot, I be willing to
become a judge for the Contest, if theres still space, if not,
it's also fine.

Well, a contest needs a deadline, an infinite contest just doesn't make any sense.

Just a suggestion: perhaps make it last 2-3 months? Maybe shorter (or longer), depending on the amount of contestants?

Also, I'm interested in this contest, but I don't know if I can finish it in time...
Regardless, I'll try my best.

Yes, you are. Not that it matters, though.

Only 3 world maps were submitted? How come there is no pictures?
